Okay - after much searching and seeing them used in a Training of O episode, we ordered these adjustable clamps that are designed to never wear out. And, the adjustment is dialed in using a very precise mechanism, so you can go from very light to very tight! I've seem them around for way too much at several sites (about $20 more at JT's), but Extreme Restraints has them for a very reasonable price:

Plus - you can use needle nose pliers to adjust the spring tension on clover clamps to make them more bearable.
