he don't believe it's dangerous, I really don't think it's a case of knowing it is, but choosing other wise.

ok.  i can understand wanting the heat (from him) and being concerned about safety (for the rest of the family).

take some flannel fabric, sew it into squares (10X10 inches works well) and fill each one about 1/2 to 3/4 full of rice.  sew the end closed again.

you can use these over and over again, they're environmentally friendly, give off a good heat for over 30 minutes, you can do the same thing with a sock to make a heat wrap for the neck.    and yes, the heat IS a good hot one, so your dad should be satisfied with the results.

kitten, helpfully

YHMA I suggest that for Christmas you take all of his reused plastics and throw them away, replace them with a variety of alternatives like those suggested here.An extension cord for an electric blanket along with a new blanket.Hand made rice holders.Hand made hot water bottle covers. If you cannot find hot water bottles look in the personal hygiene section, red rubber enema bags are the same thing as hot water bottles. If you toss his old methods he will have to at least try the ones you replace them with.

Is the plastic Microwaveable?

Is it thermoset or thermosetting?

I remember once when I was younger the water supply was contaminated. So we had to boil water and fill up old coke bottles. We decided not to let the water cool and instead put it straight in the bottle. The result was an elongated coke bottle with the bottom half stuck to the counter. Oh isn't childhood great. [:D]

Yes, child hood is. I remember messing with powderd washing detergent and liquid detergent and had the most fantastic reaction, it foamed and foamed and foamed untill the entire washroom floor was about a foot deep in thick pink foam.

hehe well one just sprung a leak and almost soaked his bed, so I guess he's given up on the idea, and adoracat I told him the idea about making his own and even said you could make it abouty as big as a baby blanket and he says now why didn't I think of that lol.

Well, at least he hasn't accidentally vaporized salicyclic acid in it yet. I did that on the stove. 15 minutes in the nude in near freezing temperatures kind of put an end to any notions of "I'll just go play this computer game while it heats up" for the future. Really interesting shade of white, those fumes, and I have a hard time imagining mace being worse.

It's also not so good, as it leaves extremely fine acrylic and aluminum powder all over the interior.

Only under acidic conditions could you generate chlorine gas- hence DON'T mix vinegar and bleach- chlorine is very nasty stuff.

Bleach and vinegar? Learn something new everyday. Now bleach and ammonia makes fumes that are a cousin to WWI's mustard gas. That's highly dangerous and housewives wind up in the hospital every year from that.

I have been in Plastic recycling for over 40 years. Bleach bottles are made of HDPE. (High Density Polyethelene) HDPE  starts to melt at around 150oC . There are no additives in it which will leach out. Coke and Mineral bottles are made of PET ( Polyester) . Heating either will not do any harm as long as you dont melt them and then kiss goodbye to youur microwave or start scraping.

Ah, that's a different matter. The light show is pretty, to be sure. Have you seen the ball lightning experiments you can do in a regular microwave oven? Lots of nice uses for a microwave. Cooking just isn't one of them. [:D]
