You have to take the good with the bad.  If I don't like something then I don't read it.  Simple as that.  It's just little fonts that don't affect my life beyond giving me a chuckle or make me think what an idiot/genius someone must be.  If you find yourself so upset by words from strangers then maybe it's time for a break?

And when I see someone on moderation I just have to go investigate back in forum time and see what flaming war they got into to incur the wrath of 11.

Owner59 -> RE: Perhaps CM Should Rename This Section (12/20/2007 7:30:14 AM)

The OP was a long and drawn out way of saying ,"shut-up" or "be quiet".

In some crowds, that may work and bring silence. Not this one, though.

BTW,if we renamed it "Belittlement Forum",people might think it`s a kink thing and expect to be belittled and degraded there.Like the Monty Python bit ,where Michael Palin is seeking "the Argument Clinic ",and walks into the "Abuse Office" by mistake and gets berated.

Seems to me there should be a Ron forum.

My talent so often goes wasted on posts that the Moderators are going to remove anyway.

And, gee I used to read your posts with great interest also enjoying your sense of humor, sincerely. I find great distaste in referring to anyone as bitches though. Oh, one here is mine though he is not a bitch.

Thank you for leaving a reply!

Now I am seriously off to bed. It is extremely late.

I am glad you used to like to read my posts and used to appreciate my humor. I imagine that because I have disagreed with you, you no longer would enjoy them. Tragic, really.

I used the word bitch in the colloquial term, not derogatory at all; more tongue in cheek. But again, words are subject to interpretation as is intent and most of all, humor. All of which is subjective. Words can only be given the power you attribute to them.

Have a lovely night.

Why on earth would I discontinue reading what I enjoy because the writer of what I have enjoyed disagrees with me? Nope, not going to happen. When I run into your posts I will still continue to enjoy them and respond if I have something to say. I am capable of not changing my opinion towards what I read based upon someone disagreeing with me. I meant what I said sincerely and have no reason to avoid or ignore or disregard your posts. Thanks as well for clarifying your usage of the term!

Be Safe,

EG

Good morning, Genie. An interesting post, but I would disagree with the above comment. Carl Sagan once said, "The well-meaning contention that all ideas have equal merit seems to me little different from the disastrous contention that no ideas have any merit", and I believe that.

The second half of your sentence was:

quote:

and yet you seek out, I have watched many actively seek out, people/anyone whom you can jump on and invalidate the given opinion

I've done that, I'm sure, but I hope not often. [:D]

Hi Level nice to see you here. Funny you should mention Carl Sagan as Cosmos was one of the first books I can remember asking for at Christmas when I was very young; hard cover edition only please. Well, when it comes to merit, no all ideas do not have equal merit. I wrote as I thought which I do not often do and perhaps should have used people instead of ideas. However, scientifically that would not be exactly true either. I do, however, believe in people's right to speak their mind on a message board. That part is not a contention that I possess. Though who am I to disagree with the idea of peeing in the shower as I didn't disagree? [;)] LOL. I try to keep my time here on the boards light and enjoyable and when I cannot or think something is going to not be enjoyable I tend to skip over it.

Some of what I said here was tongue in cheek and some was directed towards those that know who they are. 'Nuff said on those that know who they are. Did I think this thread would make a difference to anything really? Nope!

Take Good Care,

EG

so you complain about something by doing the very thing you are bitching about?  i think this should answer your own question.........one persons flaming is another persons interesting topic.......we are all.........hang on to ya bloomers......DIFFERENT!

Just a reminder. I was speaking not of topics as I find many of the original ideas in many many topics to be extremely interesting. I speak to behaviour, not of topics. I also know all about different as I have been labeled everything from different to worse and I believe strongly in individuality. Again, I speak more of conduct than anything else. Is it really necessary to disparage another to speak on a given topic always? This is my point.

Do Take Care!

EvilGenie: for once I find myself siding with a majority response by agreeing with those posters who say you are mistaken in your assessment of this section.

One of its major attractions for me is precisely that you can forcibly disagree with posters' opinions. In everyday life we all make compromises in our response to others while secretly moaning under our breath. Well I do anyway.

Here you can just spell it out , expect to receive as well as give, and long may it remain so.
Some threads, but not many, do reduce to a personal mud sling. lol

I agree with much of what you're saying and boards can be a great outlet for being able to speak freely, within a little bit of reason. I am not an inflexible boor. Perhaps last night I had just had my fill of a few things. I thank you for your respectful disagreement though I don't think you and I are that far apart in idea. I am not in a position at this moment in my life to want to or be able to forcibly get my point across in such posts which have turned to mudslinging. Another time in my life, perhaps I may have the will to go back to being forcefully honest in stating my idea on given subjects. Though right now I see an interesting topic, click in and a lot of the time bow out as I would have to push my way about. I need to be forceful to get through my days at this point and perhaps wish not to in my spare time that I have to come here.

Thank You for Taking the Time to Post!

EG

No, sorry but from my writing perspective, this was not a long and drawn out ''shut up'' or ''be quiet.'' It was however someone seeing something and explaining what it meant for them.

I never did think of the belittlement thing! OMG I am slipping. [:D]

Be Well,

EG

For others who have posted the idea that I am all so upset personally with what happens here. That idea is completely false. Some things ran through my mind last night as I read some things here and I posted an opinion, not a crying jag. If someone called me an idiot or any other given negative term do I spend time being upset personally over it? No as those who know me in my real life know who I am and that counts much more than a message board poster's given opinion based upon only my words. I am also far too busy to take very much in this life personally. My original idea in this thread had to do with behaviour of some that I see. Believe it or not, not everyone who comes here, especially the new folks have thick skin. Yes they need to get one but I wonder if they need that at post #3 or if anyone really needs it at post #9000. I can blow off what can hurt them. I see no need to denegrate anyone who has not done so to me and even then I am hard pressed to denegrate back as it just isn't my style. I can cut loose around here if and when I need to.

I think she forgot "cajole."
Whenever I make a thread I have one of those hand clickers that I use to count the number of people I get wound up.
"There's one!"
"Ha, There's another!"
"Wow! She's REALLY pissed!"

I explained why and how I have ended up here in the past. After 5 years at CM I know well how to use the block feature and I will repeat once again, this is my opinion on what I see happening here. This thread was begun by me for the purpose of airing my views. While I may read yours and everyone else's post here it does not mean that I need to agree with it nor do I have to disagree in a stomping fashion.

You have created threads solely for the purpose of airing your views which we all have the right to do; respectfully.

Happy Holidays!

If posting your own rant isnt a "stomping fashion", then tell me what is. You have a right to post anything not breaking the TOS, just as we all do. Yes there are a few posts that belittle people, probably including some of mine, and dare i say it, some of yours. As i see it, this thread belittles anyone who posts in a manner not to your liking.  Pot, kettle and black spring to mind.

Just goes to show you how vastly different we see things. I consider this section of the boards to be the best {by far} with the most reality-based, normal people.

I agree, it is the best section.

But some of the threads are far removed from "casual banter," as the OP suggests. Serious topics are often discussed here. (Gotta admit, I sometimes chuckle when the Mods move threads from here to Ramdom Stupidity though.)

It might not be a bad idea to give Off Topics a forum category of its own, with subcategories such as politics, religion, current events, etc.

I do participate in what I find interesting. I have also watched those threads descend into a mud slinging match and/or I have seen an interesting topic, read a bit of the way and realise that I cannot (a decision I make) post as people are so busy calling each other names that the original meaning of the thread has been lost and not such a do-able thing to pull it back.

My views are just that, mine. In my 5 years I have seen things go from bad to worse and have also begun plenty of threads of my own. I go to any of the boards to either learn or impart information/help though lately that is a difficult task. Just my POV. Nobody has to agree with me. Also no, I don't see this thread as contributing to the problem when it is simply someone airing a view on how they have seen this section go and their unhappiness with it. I do not come here for intellectual debate nor do I come here for bashing either. If I find a thread offensive I move along. I come to CM in general to spend some of the little time that I have to simply talk or play a game, do a poll etc. When I do weigh in, I would like to think that generally I have something to add to the topic; not to argue with those I have a non-relationship with.

I have little time to participate in anything, though I do. People can flame this to their heart's content, read more into it than is there. That is their perogative though I am being told to lighten up and it seems that many of the replies are not so light themselves. Perhaps, just perhaps, there is a method to my madness.

I Wish You All Goodnight (very late here and work comes) and Happy Holidays!

EG

The bold seems to tell the story itself. Someone got spanked and is mad.

Why not let those who enjoy the blood sport enjoy it? If they are within the TOS then it is really no concern of yours how people choose to post. If you do not like it, don't read it, no one is forcing you

I find it rather amusing when people attempt to control what other people say and how they choose to express themselves... certainly you have every right to express an opinion about it all, but this flaming thread about flaming is rather ironic, don't you think?

BBC links et al as if they are the gospel and the only truth. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but CNN and the BBC have been accused of and found guilty of manufacturing news.

Absolutely no need to apologise, I positively thrive on bad news; in fact, it's all I live for.

Anyway, cutting a long story short, 'not sure what CNN is, but I can confirm that the BBC has, indeed, been found guilty of manufacturing news. The judge involved was uncompromising in his summation: "this communist, homo, wishy washy, socialist, liberal, muslim-loving pack of Stalin apologists and assorted satanist spies, also known as the British Broadcasting Corporation, exists solely for the express purpose of undermining Western civilisation". Never mind that the judge and jury was one M. Thatcher.

To an extent, you have a point, but since when was the world inhabited solely by self-disciplined individuals primarily concerned with tea, scones and a civilised chat about the shipping forecast?

Anyway, to prove your point, I'm going to take this opportunity to flame:

I didn't mean all conservatives are stupid; I meant all stupid people are conservatives.

Those interested in a witch hunt involving burning a few conservatives at the stake, mail me.

EvilGenie -> RE: Perhaps CM Should Rename This Section (12/20/2007 1:46:45 PM)

Oh my, how I remember that damned shipping forecast coming on the radio every night when I went to bed. The sad part is, I actually listened to it! Perhaps it reminded me of Maine from where I had moved to the UK. OR possibly I was just a burk back then. [:D]
