Hey guys, I bought a new collar today because it was a phenomenal price.  It's basically a standard leather locking collar with a steel metal band around it.  It looks almost exactly like this:

But the steel has some patina to it and I'd like to know how to safely clean and shine it up without damaging the leather.  Thanks!

Very carefully. grin

The steel might have a protective finish. A finish is sometimes applied to stainless steel to protect it during manufacturing and shipping. This finish will eventually wear iff but if it does so unevenly then it can usually be stripped with whiet vinegar.

OTHER CLEANING HINTS

Use a soft, dry cotton cloth to polish it before and after wearing.

You can use a cotton cloth dampened with white vinegar or glass cleaner to remove stubborn fingerprints.

Slip an index card between the leather and the steel for extra protection to the leather.

To remove fine scratches I recommend a high quality cream polish (those specifically made for silver or stainless). Cream polishes are easier to work with on small bits as opposed to  liquids and aerosols. Cloths impregnated with polish, such as Cap Cod Polishing Cloths, also work well.

I have a simular collar.  I first clean and condition the leather as normal.  I then take a soft cloth and some glass cleaner on the corner and wipe the smudges and fingerprints from the metal part.  Seems to work great.

Look for a product called Simichrome.  It's a paste, and comes in a can or a tube.  I've used that on the metals in my horse tack for over 20 years without any deleterious effect to the leather (and I maintain the leather too, so that is a requirement!)
