I am learning!

I would like to know more about Victorian Household:  what is the focus, what are the practices?... Basically anything that you might have as info.

Thank you!

Hope you like domestic servants :o) You can easily have a staff of 4-6 people caring for you.

Try to find books about domestic servants from the Victorian era. Most people now who "practice" this type of household arrangement are starting with this historical ideas then building around them.

The best household dynamic is the one that works best for every person in the family or household in my very strong opinion. History and tradition can give us ideas but these should only be starting places. I say that as someone who has done some things purposely in a Roman manner.

Sir Stephen and slave catherine have created a Victorian household. Here is their website: http://www.restraining-order.com/

They are very open to talking to people about it and are simply wonderful people to get to know.

Others have already made good suggestions, but if you can get your hands on a DVD of the old Upstairs, Downstairs PBS series, it might help, too.

Thank you!  I have seen a couple of shows from that series... great idea!

The longer I'm in the scene, the more I'm learning that that (the Victorian upper class household) is a good model for what I want, except femdom instead of patriarchal.  I want submissive servants who know their place and their duties and accept punishment willingly when it's called for.  I want a strong team that is also a harmonious household, with no drama and no shirking.  Doesn't seem like too much to ask for.  [;)]

The good Folks of Shadowfind http://www.shadowfind.com/New%20Home%20Page.htm might be a place to ask that question or seek advice.

Dear lionessa54, Ladies and Gentlemen;

Here is my response/cut & paste on another inquiry about Victorian Lifestyle/Household.

I would further add to the list; Autumn Rose Taylor's "Taiming the Household Beast" and other domestic arts.  Her E-mail is AutumnRoz****aol.com but, it has been a long while and haven't seen her active in a very long time.  I would add to it, Alice Kerr-Southerland Society International at http://www.aks-society.org  Autumn Rose Taylor has given several presentations on Victorian service at Black Rose Conferences in Victorian garb, right down to the undergarments.  Although, it is slanted towards the Mistress-male slave the service facts are still there.  "The Governess" is also a publication which gathers more International and England's take on Victorian service, also published by the Alice Kerr-Sutherland Society International.

Another good resource is, The International Guild of Butlers.  Which hails from England.

I will add, that during the Reign of Queen Victoria, which was rather long reign; it was the period of which historical archives can be researched as far as what was happening in the USA.  Born in 1819 the coronation in 1835 (When Andrew Jackson was President), death of her husband Prince Albert in 1861 (President James Buchanan and President Lincoln), which was the year the USA went into the Civil War.  Queen Victoria's death in 1901, saw the change of our US Presidents McKinley(25) to President Theodore Roosevelt(26).  Her lifetime spanded over many Presidents (#5-James Monroe-#26-Roosevelt); so it will be important to know where in the Victorian reign you wish to create your style.  The mourning period started in 1861.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs
