The Post-Star

on Dec. 6: "Rep. Gillibrand announces she is pregnant."

First of all, I must admit that I am a male chauvinist and that there are, thankfully, differences between men and women. There are many occupations suitable for women and their physical attributes. Carrying a weapon while serving in the Armed Forces and firefighting are not suitable lines of work for women to prove that they are physically equal to men. How many male police officers feel comfortable with a 100 pound female backup?

And now, I have to add serving in the U.S. House and Senate as an occupation that may not be suitable for women.

Ms. Gillibrand's current pregnancy makes a strong case for my opinion. Ms. Gillibrand was elected to serve her constituency, and while she is away from her elected office she cannot perform those duties. The taxpayers who were duped into voting for her will have to pay for her medical benefits. Yes, Mr. and Mrs. Taxpayer, Ms. Gillibrand receives excellent health benefits, courtesy of her constituents. We will be without representation in Congress for a time leading up to and following the child's birth. There will be times when she and the new baby will visit doctors. You can add those days to the total that she will not be serving her constituents.

The current base salary (2006) for members of the House and Senate is $165,200 per year. I wonder if Ms. Gillibrand will do the right thing and reimburse the U.S. Treasury in the amount of $452.60, her daily salary, for each day that she is unable to perform her elected duties. For some reason, I doubt it.

Shameful. The attitude that someone can't do their desk job because they have a bun in the oven is asinine. Sorry, but human reproduction is something that we have to take into account when it comes to our workplace ethics.

...Not to mention the fact the the same provisions under the FMLA would be in effect if it were a "Mr" Rep. or a "Mr" Sen. who's wife was pregnant.

-fast reply-

yes, let's continue to punish half the population for having been born with ovaries. this is right up there with the belief that it's okay that women make 77 cents on the dollar (or perhaps that we should make less), because clearly the presence of our ovaries makes us less dedicated and qualified and we're just mooching off the taxpayers. but men who take off leave when their wives have children are just being good fathers.

people just make me angry sometimes.

How about small businesses who may not discriminate against women of child bearing age.
Employ a female labourer lol she gets pregnant and you have to employ another labourer and hold the female's job open if she chooses to take it. Nobody will know for sure, least of all the female.

If you ran a small business would you employ males, very reliable and hard working, or females.?
Only arskin.

Careful Seeks - didnt that UKIP guy get into a deal of trouble for suggesting that no one in their right mind would employ a woman of child bearing age for these exact reasons?

In the real world, it is a very real issue. But equally in the real world, its damned difficult enough to find anyone who is reliable, responsible and hardworking, without putting in preconditions about sex, age, nationality, religion or whatever.

And when that guy has a heartattack and expects his company to hold his job open for him and pay for his leave and medical insurance, Should he be expected to pay his company back?

That is the most illogical and insane opinion I have ever heard.

Glenys Kinnock does not make a good witness for the prosecution in this case though? She must be well past menopause by now?

Although she is/was one of those supping deep, I dont think being female is any precondition to such gluttony. There are far more males drinking themselves silly at our expense after all.

My southern hemispheres are not something which ought to concern you Seeks.

I was referring to my trip to Prague in three weeks' time - fancy coming? I could do with someone strong and handsome to carry my bags - but I guess he could carry yours too.

The UKIP guy that said the the senator should have to pay the money back for time off and doctor visits. He implied that she shouldnt have the baby visits covered? Like taking your kids to the doctor isnt already covered by family insurance? Sheesh, I just hope he never needs medical care for himself or his family.

I can fence with the best of em

Touche you too ;-)

Luscious: pregnancy is not a "medical condition" in the sense of a heart attack. It happens and does reduce the employment effectiveness of females of a certain age. Thats the OPs point.
Seems sensible to me. I just expanded it to a small business rather than the  Congress/Senate.

I know this. Matter of fact when I was pregnant, my ex changed insurance I was in a panic because i thought it would be considered a prexisting condition. It isnt so I was able to change and havemuch better insurance during my pregnancy. but come on. Do you really think us weak woman really want to work outside the home? We work because we have no choice. Penalizing us for being woman and paying us less, does not help. But if more men took absenses for their new children or didnt abandon women for having children we wouldnt have the problem in the first place. they are the ones who get us in this condition. So what do you think a businnesses responsibility should be? Fire me so I have no way of putting food on the table to pay for the child that I am probably supporting by myself? The idea that every woman has a man at home supporting her and she really doesnt have to work is false.

Luscious: you make good points except this one
quote:

Do you really think us weak woman really want to work outside the home?
Feminists have told us for years that women are capable, independant  and in the extreme dont really need men
The serious side of this thread , and you acknowledge it, shows  that argument is false.

Firts off, that "weak" was said tongue and cheek. However, i would not characterize myself as feminist but i do believe in equal but different. Women doing all the work and not getting appreciated for itis not fair. Women doing the same work for less pay isnt fair. The laws were set up so women would stop getting fired if pregnant. Unfortunately there are too many men out there unable to fully support women, a bad ecomomy that makes the one bread winner household impossible.
So what would you suggest women of child bearing age do and what do you think small business owners be able to do with those "awful" women who allow themselves to get knocked up?

Women dont really need men? True. Thats only because they are so often not around having abandoned women for other women, work, golf or plain ole abandonment . We have had no choice but to get use to not having them around.
