Being an absolute heathen myself, M'Lady--

One could hedge bets like so:

God will pardon me. It is His trade.

Heine-- on his deathbed.

LOL,
Ron

I told you I was sick. (On a gravestone in Florida I believe.)

I was going to reply the same. Except that it's not just a tomb in Florida. It's quite a common epitaph in fact. I think someone famous had it first, but I can't find who :/.

There's another famous one, the translation of which (from french) is : "Here lies my wife, she is well, for her peace and for mine." (a guy who had a difficult marriage wrote that on his wife's tomb in the 17th century).

Another nice one :
"Here lies, yes, lies, good heavens !
the Cardinal Richelieu.
and what causes my grief,
my pension lies with him"

(sorry I didn't make the translation rhyme :p... It was common to have an epitaph in the form of a quatrain, but François Villon (15th century) made a long poem that is probably one of the most well-known epitaph ).

Can't say that i have a preferred epitaph. However, i've thought for a while now that it would be wonderful to have one's ashes dumped out and a tree (redwood or cedar perhaps) planted in the lot.

Just happened across this one tonight & remembered this thread...

(This is an actual tombstone in the Mount Royal Cemetery, located in the center of Montreal. The St. Joseph Oratory is visible in the background at the top right)

Free your body & soul
Unfold your powerful wings
Climb up the highest mountians
Kick your feet up in the air
You may now live forever
Or return to this earth
Unless you feel good where you are

Note the capitals letters

I have seen some truly interesting graves in my time. Someone I know has one of his sketches etched in the back of his tombstone. What I would like on my grave is as follows...

Lived Vividly
Danced Wildly
Loved Greatly
Until We Meet Again...

I hope I can make those words true.

The bottom line says "Missed by your friends"

Check http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Epitaphs for more.

H G Wells' could be the origin of the "I told you I was sick", although that's very recent.

-Boltzmann's, in Vienna : S=k Log W

-And on roman tombs : "NF.F.NS.NC"

Which stands for : non fui. fui. Non sum. non curo.
In english : I wasn't. I was. I'm not. I don't care.
