My hometown of Woburn, Mass just North of Boston.
Hated it.
No jobs or opportunities, an industrial city with two major highways running through it. Very heavy traffic.
Plus, it's in "Kennedy Country."
Strict gun laws = high crime.
Housing is very expensive! If this condo I'm in now were there it would go for $400k.
High taxes, "Taxachusetts."
VERY bad politicians; Cong. Ed "Know Nothing" Markey, Senators Kennedy and Kerry, Governor  "Cadillac" Deval Patrick.

Where I live now; Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Great weather! VERY low taxes, $378 per year on the condo.
That would be $5,000 in New England.
Sixty miles of warm water beaches, 3200 restaurants, whatever type of food you want and cheap!
A restaurant bill for two here, $25-$30; in Boston area $45-$85.
Three bedroom 2 bath condos on a golf course for $149k!
One hundred and ten golf courses.
Very nice people with that Southern Hospitality.
Shows, concerts, carshows, motorcycle week, a brandnew "Hard Rock" Park here.
All kinds of things to do here!
Lots of Yankees moving here from all over the N.E., Midwest, Fla and Calif.
Easy going way of life, no "parking problems" like up North, everything's easy to get to, low crime.
Great place to retire to! Easy to make new friends here, nowhere near as hot as Florida.

I (male 1/2 of this profile) spent most of my life growing up in Ithaca New York. Do I miss it? you bet.
would I move back? Not on my life.

LOVE: that I can actually read a novel in public without calling attention to myself.

That I can debate politics loudly in the town commons or participate in a march without ending up on some police watch list.

The small city rewards the healthy. You can walk anywhere in twenty minutes if you're used to hills.

You can also be in the bottom of one of several sixty foot georges surrounded by rushing water and trees from any point of the city for the same twenty minute walk.

It's small enough that you can easily recognize most of the other people who grew up there your age every time you leave the house and have a personal relationship with all of them.

It's a large enough college town that there's constantly new young, intellegent people to meet.

You can drive out into the stars without traffic and light pollution.

the state parks and the hiking. wow. pretty.

that you can be gay and hip, or just happen to be gay and a member of such-and-such church.

the prevalence of poetry mic's, art, and local music.

the prevalence of prayer-flags and buddhist monks.

the freedom to live in america, any way and with any politics or lifestyle you choose, without constantly having your patriotism put on trial.

The local pot (when I was younger) is much preferred to the alchoholism so rampant in most of the rest of the western world.

WHAT I HATE:

most of the local youth are potheads untill their late twenties or thirties who's personal and professional lives are permantly stuck in a state of 21ness.

how afraid of change such a 'progressive' city can be

That such a small, conservative, one-newspaper, mono-social company town constantly pats itself on the back for being progressive.

That the main employers, Cornell and Ithaca College, charge well over a hundred grand for four years tution, and cornell is constantly investing BILLIONS in new construction, yet they take full advantage of paying their employees the bargan basement, upstate new york wages.

that the majority of university/city/hosbital (most everyone 'professional' ) employees make under 35K.

that the majority of locals who stay in town end up working in the service industry for under 10 an hour despite being educated in a very competitive school system

that most young locals can't even AFFORD to spend their adult live's anywhere within three hunderd miles of their parents.

That a quarter of the apartments on craigslist say 'grad students only'

That the cost of living rises far faster than the national/upstate ny average every year because half the population is college students who can either afford it through loans or who's parents can, while the working families get pushed further and further out into the boondocks to make rent.

that the town fancies itself 'diverse', yet almost all the non-white people live in a very few, very defined, much poorer neighborhoods

that people hate places like Starbucks or national corporations for being part of some corporate conspiracy, so that patronize lower-paying health-care-lacking local alternatives in the name of libralalism

that all the hip young people are either irresponsibly broke or subsidised through their parents so that they dont think about things like low wages or lack of health care being a problem at the places they consider hip and egalitarian

that you can't say that about the local economy, or even wear nice clothes and shave every day, without being considered a conservative asshole that needs to "lighten up", despite the local pride at being such an 'diverse, enlightend and egalitarian town' - being proactive in ithaca definatly means bleating the same thoughts as the rest of the sheep

I'll be moving minutes away from Mr. Wonderful.  It was planned for February but pushed back to the Spring.  I can't wait!

Every time I see this I think of Mr. Big from Sex and the City and how you never found out his name until the final episode!

On the topic though, I like that the city I live in is a college town, so its definitely got a really cool yuppie vibe to it.  I also like that because its so diverse, there are just some great restaurants as well as great food sources for organic, fresh, and diverse types of food since I love to cook and its very rare that I can't find an ingredient - not to mention the multiple farmers markets in the spring and summer that continue through the winter.  I also like that I can smell the ocean air in the summer time from my bedroom.  In the summer there is literally an outdoor concert every single day, and during the month of June there are multiple outdoor diverse wonderful music concerts each day.

I don't like that just like most New England towns everyone is kind of cramped in together - you get used to it but sometimes I wonder about living in the west where there's so much more physical space between peoples homes.  Since I live in a city you get hood rats, homeless, crazy homeless, and in the summer loud music playing people - I think the town officials simply don't pay enough attention to quality of life issues.

C~

Edited to add: Also, the taxes are way to high (just like every town in New England)!

LOL, if it helps, I called him that before I ever saw a Sex and the City episode.  Now I chuckle when I watch the reruns, every time they mention Mr. Big.

What do you love about where you live? Hate? Would  you move if you could? Where?

Love - the humour and a sturdy approach to life - people will keep going through any knock-backs, and invariably see the funny side in any given situation.

On the downside, people are cynical - very cynical.

I'd move to somewhere else in Northern England; further afield, I'd go to Germany.

I'm a military brat so technically my hometown is a US Air Force Base outside of Tokyo, so I share about where I live now:

San Francisco Bay Area:  Love: The Scenery, it really doesn't get much better than this.  The Diversity, The Bay Area is one of those areas that has so many cultures like New York and for the most part the racial diversity hasn't had much problems except in the 70 and now all of a sudden in some of the East Bay cities (which is more about gang activity than race).  I love the stores.  The little towns that are in the Bay Area around San Francisco and their unique charms.  The coast.  The fact that this is probably the most liberal area in America after Portland, OR and Seattle, WA.  The fact that has a thriving kink community. The food. Close to Napa, Monterey and Tahoe.

Hate: The cost of living is ridiculous!  The traffic is even worse than Atlanta.  There is a lot of growing crossroads and the diversity issues are causing some problems.  The murder rates of the city of Oakland and the town of Richmond (almost 100 murders in a town of 50,000). The abandonment of the Hunter's Point area of the city. The kink community is so big that it doesn't have that underground feeling and too many separatists in it. Not enough BBW in kink community (half hearted joke). Too far from the East Coast.

Maybe this thread will be here in a few months so I can do one about Atlanta too

Z-

Love- My parents are here, as well as a few close friends.  I am surrounded by kick ass historical sites.  There are some really awesome places to take pics of the scenery.  Its pretty quiet.  I love our little podunk parades twice a year.  The locally owned coffee shops that let local bands play on the weekends.  The firework displays on July 4th.

Dislikes - Liberty University, nuff said.  Its hard to get a job around here with 5-ish colleges in the area.  The ass weasels that drive like they got their license out of cracker jack boxes.  The lack of clubs and bars.  The only place for a concert to be had is a restaurant where ya have to be 21 to see the show, or LU campus.  The taxes.  The crazy apartment complexes that put college kids as first priority (grrr!) The beach is 4 hours away.  The clubs are 60 minutes away.  Stupid skater kids that skate in the parking lot and get pissed when ya roll right over their boards.

If I could live anywhere, it'd probably be Hawaii, Cali, Texas, or Miami.

Wait a minuet. The topic says "Home Town." The question in the OP ask about where I am currently living. They happen to be two different places.

Anyways, I don't like my home town very much. That's why I moved to where I'm happy. That's right, I'm happy where I live. If I didn't like it here, then I wouldn't have moved here in the first place.

My home town is Fairfax, VA, just outside of DC.  My current place of residence is Herndon, VA.... also just outside of DC, more or less.  I've always liked living in a place so close to a big city, because anything I WANT to do is available.  There're interesting shops, a bunch of clubs, a thriving BDSM community, lots of geeky people like me to hang around with, and plenty of jobs to be had.
...when dealing with the traffic on some days, though, it makes me question whether it's worth it.  Also, everything seems so standardized... sure, there're little collections of small businesses here and there, but the area is dominated by the big-name stores and resteraunts.  It can be hard to find something really unique unless you dig rather far.

As to where I'd move to if I wasn't here, I think San Francisco'd be it, really.  I've never been there, but from everything I've heard, it'd really be a place to see.  Heh, living in Las Vegas for a few months would be fun, too, though I'm sure the glitter wears off before too long.

Everything (Seattle). Love? The thing I love the most about this place is...there's so damn much money floating around here, it's like picking cherries off a tree.

I may move one of my companies to the midwest in a few years, only because it'd be more efficient for distribution, but Seattle will always be where the cats and my clean shirts stay.

Not really. It is a play on Deval/Deville, and his choice of luxury cars at the taxpayers expense, when previous governors were satisfied with standard Fords similar to police vehicles or taxis.

As far as Memphis, what can I say.. the ghost of Elvis is getting pretty ripe about now, the music scene is depressing, the museums, theater, restaurants etc. are mostly mediocre. The annual readers favorites poll invariably includes chain establishments in the top choices, and the political set up is beyond corrupt.

And violent crime is the growth industry.

On the plus side, very nice zoo, middling cost of living, no traffic to speak of, moderate weather, quasi-tolerant of alternative lifestyles, sitting on top of a high quality aquifer, and quite a few very friendly people.

What do you love about where you live? Hate? Would  you move if you could? Where?

My forever home /hometown : A friendly little enclave in Marin at the top of Madrone Canyon

What I love :

*My family – They’re all in Marin/ Calistoga /Pleasanton/ SF and The Southern Cal desert

*Just a great place to live and grow up in.  All my life-long friends are still there. With no traffic - just a fifteen minute hop, skip and jump over to the premiere financial Mecca of the west coast.

What's really neat is that unlike a lota places, after the kids graduate from high school, most never have to leave because there's abundance of high-paying jobs.

*The culture…..There’s just a great, truly eclectic mix from all over.

Whole lota Pisans, Irishmen, brothers and vatos. Q-Parties abound - every weekend, rain or shine.  And the girls….well, Marin girls are the northern equivalent to Southern Cal’s original valley girls. They’re cosmo….but also really kick-back. The place is happening and the people are hella warm.

What I dislike:

*The area has been impregnated by Peninsula yuppies on an extended credit plan – Bunch of phony mofos.

*The traffic stinks. It’s always been bad….but it’s even more overwhelming now.

My home now:  James Kim country, coastal mountains Southern Oregon.

What I love :

*Whole lota adventure’s and people with a flair for the great outdoors and exploration.

*Lota do-it-yourselfers and talented craftsman up here.

*The surreal beauty of the rain forest. Again...It’s an adventure’s paradise.

*Old homes and country farms - with ''work shops'' instead of garages.

*World class whitewater and an abundance of wildlife.

*Zero congestion / traffic.

*The real-estate is also cheap as hell {For the west coast}.

What I dislike :

*The large ''belt buckle mentality''... I want the solitude and relaxation country living brings….but without all the county-asses. Although flexible... I'm just not the kinda guy you wanna bring to a square dance

Don’t get me wrong tho…most country people are good, decent people – its scrappy-do’s and white trash that I have a hard time with.

*There are no guineas or brothers up here – That means lack of good bar-b-que and shity Italian food.

*And the restaurants all close at 8:30 pm. Oh yeah….frozen Chicken fried steak with powered country gravy is a delicacy up here. Really….this would be a huge shock for anyone with a gourmet palate.

*My drive to the gym is an hour and fifteen minutes every single day.

*Last but not least – The absence of the Raiders, 49ers, Giants and Golden State Warriors. Never a couch potato – We made it a point to go to the games.

Yeah, I meant where you currently live, so "home town" could be incorrect for some.

What do you love about where you live?

I live on the same peice of property my family has lived on for over 160 years. Everyone within a few miles is related to me or are in-laws of someone who is related to me. I can walk accross the street and see this http://www.collarme.com/Attachments/40316299409A16385634687p1.jpg
I dont have to worry about my UMs playing outside, if they are ever in trouble outside they know they can go to any house on the street and get help. If my UMs ever do anything wrong I know that any house on the street will handle the situation. My UMs have many cousins who live within walking distance with whom they can and do play with every day. There are enough open pastures in my neighborhood that my UMs have tons of space to run around and act like boys and get plenty of exercise. Everyone who works at my UMs school either worked there when I went there, or went to school with me when I went there, or knows people I know or is related to me. I have neighbors who will look after my house when I am away. My UMs will grow up surrounded by grandparents, great grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. We live far enough out from the town to be able to see a sky full of amazingly bright stars on a clear night, but close enough in that I can run get a gallon of milk without using half a tank of gas.
quote:

 Hate?

I live surrounded by family. Yea, I know. Its one of the things I said I love...but I also hate it. No privacy. Grandparents and cousins walk in my house all hours of the day and night without knocking, if I have company here late at night or spending the night even, I get phone calls and visits to make sure everything is "ok". The area is extreamly southern baptist and there is not very much of a scene around here. Closest town we can go to for big parties and great lifestyle events is a 3 hour drive.
quote:

Would  you move if you could? Where?

Yes, into my Aunts house next door. Unfortunantly I cant do that until she dies.
