It's called a "strappado"

For the most part, positions with the arms pulled tight in a direction straight behind the back tend to shove the shoulder blades together, along with any muscle tissue, so it gets uncomfortable more quickly than other positions.  A similar uncomfortable position would be suspended by the arms above the head and behind the back, with no other support; it can eventually lead to suffocation due to the way it constricts one's breathing, if I recall...they used to do something similar aboard naval vessels a few hundred years ago, as a form of punishment for deckhands; some lived, some didn't.

And severely damage your shoulder joints and nerves passing through the area... I'm not quite sure this is feasible, it's not within my comfort zone to put it mildly.

Note that this (damage to the shoulder joints and nerves) is also the case with a regular, non-suspended, strappado if you should happen to fall. And as pulling the arms upwards behind the back tends to push the head down, fainting is not an unlikely scenario. Actually, I've seen it almost happen once. Please do be careful with this bondage position and keep your knife or EMT shears very close at hand. Personally, when I use a strappado position, I tend to attach a chest harness to the overhead point first, and then pull the arms up. Should my partner faint or fall for other reasons, the rope connected to the harness will take a large part of the blow, limiting damage.

Strappado. And for those of us who are klutzy in the extreme, it is recommended not to do so in heels. I fell off them, wrenched my arm and it was four months before it fully recovered.

Yes, 'strappado' although, personally I call it 'unsafe'

I like my rotator cuff and do not want surgery..

there are several similar yoga poses that do the same thing that would open up your joints a little, but i would find a d*mn good teacher before you venture there. you can do some serious damage otherwise.

Advanced rope bondage hardly ever is "safe", so personally, I could call half of what I do "unsafe". The problem with strappado is not so much that it's more unsafe than other advanced bondage positions, but rather that it's extremely easy to tie a strappado without much bondage knowledge. Not many people will attempt military (breath restricting) hogtie's or (partial) suspensions without knowledge and experience - at least I hope so -, but anyone who can do a simple two column wrist tie and has an overhead hard point can tie a strappado.

There are ways to make a strappado safeer, like I described in my previous post, but that requires slightly more rope bondage skills.
