Rope Web - 12/30/2007 12:47:08 PM

I saw a picture of a rope scene where a boy was secured to this elaborate "spider's web" made of rope. My questions are, 1)is this sort of rope work officially called "spider's web?" 2) Can anyone point me to some info on how to construct such a beauty? 3) How does one secure the thing down so that it actually works as a something to tie someone down on? 3) About how much rope would one need? 4) And about how much time does it take to construct? Lastly, 5) Is it reusable?, ie: can it be taken down and set up somewhere else?

Any answers appreciated. Thank you.

I look forward to reading the responses to your questions. I enjoy working with rope but wonder if I have the patience for the spider web.

I have seen one done at one of our retreats. (My local group, that is) It took him a couple of hours to set it up between two trees, and probably about half that to take down afterwards. It's been a while, so I really don't remember how much rope was involved, I do know he used 3 different ropes, only because that was what he had available at the time. The trees were about 4' apart, and the whole thing was probably about 5' tall, starting about 18" off the ground. It also took a long time to get the sub tied into it, and unfortunately, because of a bad back, she had to be let down shortly after. If I remember any other details, or happen to talk to the maker anytime soon, I will try to get back here and post what I find.

Yes it's called a spiderweb.

Information, instructions, materials needed, etc. here: http://www.bdsm-chicago.com/cram/TUTS_spiderweb.html

Their main rope page, which has lots of info:  http://www.bdsm-chicago.com/cram/CRAM_tuts.html

If you're going for a theme, here is a web-shaped paddle: http://www.edenfantasys.com/sex-toy-reviews/bdsm/spider-paddle-entrap-her

I also love the spiderweb!  I've talked with some friends about possibly commissioning one to be made out of metal cable at some point. Of course, it wouldn't be portable, but it would be awesome in a dungeon- temperature conductive, sturdy, and (best of all) capable of carrying a bit of an electric current!) The major technical issue so far is that it would require a good system to hold it up- preferably one built with a swivel, so the whole thing can be inverted at will.. mmmm...

At our local dungeon in L.A. [passive arts] there is a spiders web made out of metal chain....fun to bounce on and holds up at 400 pounds. Not entirely sure how it go there and who made/bought it but DevineAndrogyne, one of the top friends on my myspace profile might be able to give ya the proper info.

I like the metal chain idea, esp. for a permanent dungeon space...that sounds very cool. Like the fact that it can stand up to a lot of poundage, too. Thanks for idea.

There is a picture on the Lair de Sade (Los Angeles) web page that shows a spider web made out of chain.

I have constructed a few bondage webs (what I call them), one of which I installed in a friend's dungeon. Check it out:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2092/2159033949_80c1f49147_m.jpg

While many people tend to like the spider web design, my favorite is the dream catcher, as it allows one to work continuously with lengths of rope (or whatever material is used), cutting back on the number of connector knots needed for completion.

My approach to this design is to tie a base rope to stationary points, say a suspension frame. While doing so I create evenly-spaced anchor points along the base rope, usually using an alpine butterfly knot (http://www.animatedknots.com/alpinebutterfly/index.php). Once the anchor points have been created I then began weaving the rope into the dream catcher design, which is simply pulling rope through the anchor points, twisting once and then moving along to the next anchor point. For more info on building a dream catcher, go to:
http://www.rivernen.ca/build_dc.htm.

For the bondage web in the picture above I used a total of 200 ft of rope. You could do it with less rope; you'd just have to create fewer anchor points. This would in turn create larger gaps in your design, but in the end what you do create will adequately hold a captive that's bound to it.

A friend of mine is incredibly adept at organically creating bondage webs around a captive by connecting rope between body harnesses on the captive and stationary objects (usually suspension beams) and then tying these ropes together in amazing patterns (like a double helix). It seems to take him anywhere from 45 to 75 minutes to complete, depending on the complexity of the design. I find his work fascinating, but it simply pains me to no end to watch him take it all down, sometimes just to free the captive. I say, let 'em burn! But that's just me!

If you have any questions, feel free to message me directly. It's hard to know if any of this has been clear.
