The Bush administration again sticks its head in the sand like an ostrich (actually I wonder about this simile- that's a pretty good defensive position for the bird.) with this one. http://alt.coxnewsweb.com/ajc/pdf/gerberding.pdf Julie Gerberding, head of the CDC, was asked to present testimony to Congress on the likely challenges to health from global warming. Note- it's irrelevant as to the cause of global warming, this statement is solely focused on the effects. By the time the OSTP and OMB got through redacting the document, it reads like an advertisement- not a description of possible challenges. The conclusions she described are straightforward, based on sound science, and would be accepted by peer review, but not by the Bush administration. How is Congress supposed to act appropriately when they aren't being told of the challenges? How is the public supposed to react? Is this a democracy? Because from my perspective, it sure as hell ain't. Sam

Popeye If you read the link- this is yet another Katrina waiting to happen. By not allowing a discussion of possible health effects due to global warming, the Bush administration limits preparedness options. As noted in my first post- the statement does not delve into the sources of global warming i.e. anthropogenic or otherwise, but merely describes the possible health effects that we should prepare for. My point here is that this is yet another example of how the Bush administration has stifled discussion that might lead to more productive ways of attacking a problem. If there is an outbreak of something like dengue, lumping the CDCs response with FEMAs response is certainly unjust. In contrast to FEMA, here is the head of an agency trying to sound a warning- and being stifled for her troubles. Sam

Sambo, we can't even get the Bush Administration to enforce the Immigration laws that are on the books or to close that Mexican border, some of the most basic of govt responsibilities and you think they're going to want to espouse your issue? GFL!

Umm Popeye? Protecting the public health is right up there with their responsibilities- and they're shirking. I wholeheartedly agree with you that having any type of reasonable expectations of this administration does seem to involve either lots of alcohol or other delusions. What's impressive is the absolute arrogance and the failure to learn from their mistakes- it's like Katrina never happened. (Sorry, not the hurricane- the incredibly inept response.) Sam

My impression was that the Bush administration did not acknowledge global warming? Therefore, to talk about health consequences of something which does not exist, would seem a waste of time. One thing one can say for them - they are consistent in their stupidity. E

Hi Lady E I think their tune has changed slightly- at the last global warming conference in Bali, the Bush administration was at least beginning to admit that something might be going on. There is a bit of a difference between saying global warming doesn't exist, and global warming does exist, but it's not due to anthropogenic factors- which is where I think they're headed now. But yeah- it's impressive how they can just blatantly ignore facts that would require a response that they don't want to make. Sam

I guess though, it would make them look kinda more stupid if they were to acknowledge that global warming resulted from CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels - when they just spent all these years, not to mention lives and trillions of dollars on acquiring more supplies of fossil fuels.........? Good grief Firm! Here's the situation- Julia Gerberding, head of the CDC was ASKED to speak in front of Congress about the possible health impacts from global warming. She prepares testimony, and then prior to submitting it, has it redacted by the OSTP and then OMB to the point where it's gutted of any science or extrapolation- feel free to read the piece in the above link which has the redacted sections in yellow. Is this person worthy of your scorn? Is trying to bury a valid message in BS helpful? Sam
