Wow. I thought this was a joke. Heck I still think it's a joke, but the daily mail is supposed to be a legitimate news source, so I'm guessing they're not joking. Well, it does make sense. Benedict has already started nibbling away at Vatican II and trying to go back to the good old days. Many people have turned to exorcism as a fix for the mid-life crisis and teen rebellion, as well as for actual mental health issues. Those numbers are on the rise as right-wing fundamentalists both in America and abroad spread fear among the impressionable masses, so I can believe that there's been an increasing number of requests for exorcisms coming in - which is arguably part of what sparked the initiative. Funny thing is, I live in a house FULL of pagans. It's extra-full at the moment, as we have folks coming in for the annual New Years Eve Ball. When I came upstairs and gave a brief thumbnail of the article, the general response was, "COOL!" - there were some questions that came up, of course, but none of them in the same vein as the questions posed by the OP. I think the best one was, "If this is to combat the rise of godlessness, how do you exorcise an athiest?" (I started pantomiming splashing holy water on them, shouting "the power of christ inspires you!") I'm going to have to dig deeper and see what I can find. Actually, I have to agree with the house consensus. I think it's kind of cool.
