The Pope has ordered his bishops to set up exorcism squads to tackle the rise of Satanism.

Vatican chiefs are concerned at what they see as an increased interest in the occult.
They have introduced courses for priests to combat what they call the most extreme form of "Godlessness."
Each bishop is to be told to have in his diocese a number of priests trained to fight demonic possession.

As seen here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/articles/news/worldnews.html?in_article_id=504969&in_page_id=1811&Satan=Santa

So my question is:  Will there be a wave of citizens coming forward to be exorcised?  Would you call upon a priest?  Should we all call upon one?

Do you believe there are lil'beasts'deep within you that need ridding of?

Will the government keep track of who had demons and who didn't?

Will we return to witch-hunts?

Will this make the world a better place or is it merely fear mongling from the Catholic church?

and finally, what impact would this have on the mentally ill?  Are we going to see the return of the 'demonic/crazy behavior' having a quick fix now instead of meds?

Will the mentally ill of the world be relieved of their diagnosed disorder?

Sooo many questions, what do ya think?

...but will they be kung fu fighting priests who sadly get bitten by zombies? Enquiring minds want to know......

Wow. I thought this was a joke. Heck  I still think it's a joke, but the daily mail is supposed to be a legitimate news source, so I'm guessing they're not joking. Well, it does make sense. Benedict has already started nibbling away at Vatican II and trying to go back to the good old days. Many people have turned to exorcism as a fix for the mid-life crisis and teen rebellion, as well as for actual mental health issues. Those numbers are on the rise as right-wing fundamentalists both in America and abroad spread fear among the impressionable masses, so I can believe that there's been an increasing number of requests for exorcisms coming in - which is arguably part of what sparked the initiative.

Funny thing is, I live in a house FULL of pagans. It's extra-full at the moment, as we have folks coming in for the annual New Years Eve Ball. When I came upstairs and gave a brief thumbnail of the article, the general response was, "COOL!" - there were some questions that came up, of course, but none of them in the same vein as the questions posed by the OP. I think the best one was, "If this is to combat the rise of godlessness, how do you exorcise an athiest?" (I started pantomiming splashing holy water on them, shouting "the power of christ inspires you!")

I'm going to have to dig deeper and see what I can find. Actually, I have to agree with the house consensus. I think it's kind of cool.

The athiest could have demons inside I suppose, but he wouldn't believe he does.

Therefore he would not vollunteer for an exorcism.

So the question is: are some just really horrible people or do we have someone (minions) to blame for our behavior in certain instances?

If you do not accept the responsibility then lies with a demon, then that person must be in true denial that he/she is just a crappy human being??

hmmm, could then prisoners (murderers, etc) be released after such an exorcism?
Scary.  Will new laws be passed to honor this 'devine' intervention??

I thought the Pope would be happy. I’ve never understood the logic where you can be a Satanist and yet at the same time not be validating the whole misguided belief system which is religion?

you can't, you are correct.

to believe in the darkness (lack of light) you must believe in such light.

some Athiests are often hypocrites in this regard.

Well, it's a self-validating cycle - satanists and christians feed off of each other, synergystically heterodyning off of each other's orthodoxy. (Wow. I almost never get to use all three of those words in one sentence. Go me!)

Sadly, tragically, the Daily Mail report is slightly inaccurate - the person who made the original announcement is named Paolo Scarafoni - and also out of date. The vatican issued a denial of Father Scarafoni's announcement yesterday:

"...But Father Federico Lombardi, the director of the Vatican press office, flatly denied the Petrus report. The papal spokesman said: "Pope Benedict XVI has no intention of ordering local bishops to bring in garrisons of exorcists to fight demonic possession.” (from Catholic World News www.cwnews.com)

Interesting phrasing, though, isn't it - I'm not the only one to have noticed the use of the term "garrisons of exorcists" - technically, one or two per parish isn't a garrison, now is it?

Of course, I wonder how this will affect the vatican's space program?

Hmm if they get enough of them together do you think they can exorcise Ratzinger? *Shudders and mutters "Evil Pope.. Evil Pope"*

and if we get some in my parrish do you think if I drop off my sweeties wife, they will drive the devil woman out of her? Pure evil I am tellin' ya.

Seriously though Ratzinger is throwing the church back into the middle ages.. in everything he does. Pope John Paul II was very progressive, and a down right inovator compared to this guy. Heck Pope Innocent III was a more understanding and lienent dude then this guy. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Innocent_III

So there are not legions of witch hunters.. er.. I mean executioners.. damn, er.. I mean exorsists.
Color me untrusting.. but I think this is just the begining.

::Looks shifty:: Legions? Who said anything about legions? The vatican never mentioned legions. They only mentioned garrisons. Which they deny. There won't be any legions of exorcists in any parish or bishopric. Or garrisons. Yeah.

I think religious people are crazy. Those who happen to be crazy in this manner- to believe little demons haunt them and make them do bad things- well, sure, why not? They probably figure, "Couldn't hurt."

After all, we live in a universe that's full of non-physical things that control us. Surely, some of those things that control us must be causing the bad as well as the good! We need to exorcise ourselves to rid ourselves of these bad influences, because they're like.. all non-physical.. so we can't do it ourselves.. we need like, spirits and ghosts and other voices in our heads to help us out..

The good voices will conquer the bad voices! HURRAY!

Unless, of course, the bad voices when.. then we must burn things for Santa..

I believe little demons haunt me. They have names like Gamigyn and Orobas. I practice all sorts of rituals to summon them and ask them for advice and counsel. By and large, the advice turns out to be bad. Bad demons! No human sacrifices until you give me those lottery numbers!

greetings came4u,

i'm buddhist. we do exorcisms. not quite the same as catholic exorcisms, mind you, but exorcisms nonetheless.

personally, i think if it's spiritually helpful, why the hell not? i find certain practices used in exorcisms in my faith to be spiritually helpful. why should catholics not do the same?

yes, it's bad when people are using such measures as answers to problems that need health or other kinds of professional care, but people do that for religious reasons (and all other kinds of reasons, including just having irrational fear/hatred of doctors and mistrust of therapy) all the time, not just for exorcisms, and plenty of people who DO participate in exorcisms also are reasonable enough to seek professional care when necessary.

respectfully,
annabelle.
