popeye1250 -> Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 4:38:22 PM)

Here in Myrtle Beach on New Year's Eve I like to out on the front stoop about 10 minutes before midnight and listen to the fireworks and gunfire.
You can tell the gunfire it sounds like "bang, bang, bang, bang" in rapid succession as someone empties an 8 or 10 round magazine.
And it comes from all directions too!
Does this happen in your area too?

Sounds kind of dangerous.. I've heard a fair numbers of stories of people getting hurt that way, since, well, those bullets do need to land somewhere..

Not really any gun fire around here, though. Mostly scattered fireworks. I'm tempted to say they're illegal here (not sure), but they seem to be fired anyway.

Thankfully the gunfire celebrations tend to happen more down in the city than out where I live.I'm spending the evening curled up in bed, will likely be sound asleep before midnight. I caught icky germs on the flight out to Vegas so I'm not up to doing 'stuff'. Honestly I've not gone out on New Years Eve in years and years, being in a mass of drunk people and drunk drives lost its charm for me a long time ago. Plus we are expecting up to 8 inches of snow tonight!

happens every year where i'm at, but out in the country? that's a first.

Yes. I'm in rural central Arkansas. There's fireworks, there's gunfire...those aren't so bad. Iit's the guy up on the hill with the civil war-era replica cannon that bothers me... It always sounds like WWIII has been declared when he sets that thing off...

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 4:53:28 PM)

my brother has a lil cannon - maybe an 18 inch barrel-and i swear they use grits in it somehow at reenactments......that damn thing will break windows with the concussion it causes.........

I don't think I will hear gunfire in my immediate neighborhood, but there
will certainly be plenty of gunfire all around in my area.
Actually, I might step outside also, I am sure I will hear it.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 4:58:55 PM)

Yep, I will definitely hear it here.  I am home sick with a cold, so that will be the highlight of my New Years.  I won't lie, I have done it myself a few times.  Of course I didn't live in the middle of town like I do now.  It's been like that ever since I was a kid.

GreedyTop -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 4:59:20 PM)

When I lived in SoCal, I heard gunfire.  Moved to GA, not so much.  Fireworks where I work now (of course there are 2 fireworks booths within seeing distance of my job), and sporadic gunfire near my house.

The gunfire bothers me, since (as someone pointed out) the bullets have to land SOMEWHERE.

barefootprincess -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 5:05:11 PM)

Im in Baltimore City, SO I think that it might be the one night the Fireworks cover up the sound of shots being fired.
Thats so funny, because I used to live up north of here and I thought nothing of a couple of kids walking by my place with a gun or two going out to hunt. Now I see that, I know they are not deer hunting.

It wouldnt be a Holiday, birthday, baby shower, congratulations, Talk Like A Pirate Day, Arbor Day, Free Pancake Day, or any other celebration if the dingle dork neighbors didnt play with their Red Rider BB Guns.

HaveRopeWillBind -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 6:21:30 PM)

Hey this is not far from Detroit. We don't need no stinking Holiday to shoot off our guns at night, A regular weeknight is just fine. I've lived in this area 17 years now and have lost count of the number of nights I have been lulled to sleep by semi-automatic or even automatic gunfire close by. There is a reason why brick house are popular here.

Youresomine -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 6:23:06 PM)

Gunfire? I hear that every night :)

farglebargle -> RE: Gunfire in your area tonight? (12/31/2007 6:24:33 PM)

The transmission of the time synchronization by audio/video signals has been a tradition.

Beginning with the "Time Balls", of which you can see the evolution in Times Square tonight, many localities, ( e.g.: Edinborough ) have used cannons to signify "Noon", and even these days, doesn't the local Fire Squad run their sirens at noon?

Transmitting midnight using firearms and fireworks is a natural evolution of that tradition.

We had a huge slug go through the fiberglass roof of our GMC Jimmy one NewYears at my parents' mountain cabin in Eastern WA.  That was the same year my dad took our branding iron and branded the cedar panelling in the cabin.  This was about 1980.

Back in the 50's my dad used to fire shots from our porch in the middle of Seattle.  I'm sure it's illegal now.
