I'm looking for advice on how to find internship oppurtunities to apply for (particularly in Virginia).

Mostly, it seems to be a combination of Google'ing, looking on job sites, talking to professors, and consulting the advisors in the department and career center. I think that's a fairly complete manner of checking, but anything missed would be appreciated.

What I'm really hoping for here would be sites that may offer searches for internships. If anyone happens to know any particular oppurtunities, too, that would be neat.

Since I'm not the only college student on these boards, information in general could be potentiently useful.

For me, in specific, I'm hoping for a Chemical Engineering internship primarily, though I'm not at all opposed to looking at general Engineering or Chemistry internships.

It's my hope that sending out a bunch of applications will increase the chances of finding more ideal situations.

Thanks for any help.

Co-op's, entry-level jobs for undergrads, and other things similar to internships are also of interest.

Try Monster and FastWeb. Good luck.

greetings curiouslord,

i'm guessing you've already thought of this, but do you have a fastweb profile? they mostly list scholarships but also internships and entry-level jobs. you've got it mostly covered with the googling, talking to professors, job sites, career center, advisor stuff. there are also sometimes really good, up-to-date resource books for careers and internships in some fields - when i was a crim double major, i saw some great career directories for that field, and i'm sure there's got to be something around for engineering. also, check the hospitals - they love engineers and employ loads of people (especially interns) so there's bound to be at least some sort of job or internship available related to what you're looking for there. depending on what university you're at and how comfortable you are with talking to grad students/profs in your field, i'd recommend emailing people at other universities around (i was specifically thinking of uva, but that's just because that's the only university i really know anything about in virginia, LOL) who might be able to help or give you advice. i've always found that people who work in my field are really willing to talk to someone who's passionate about what they want to do, even if they don't happen to be located at your university (it helps if they have similar research interests to what you want to do, though).

anyway, hoping you don't know all this already and i could be of some help, hehehe. best of luck!

annabelle.

Curious,

I'm not too sure about VA, but if you are willing to jump over one state to WV there are chemical and/or energy companies every few miles all along the Ohio River and not all that many engineering schools. Might be a good place to look.

Thanks all for the advice.

I've checked out FastWeb.. seems to be just colleges and scholarships, but I'll likely look at the scholarships as they can help to serve a good purpose. No luck on Monster just yet with the Engineering-internship-in-Virginia bit, but I'll likely try back another time. I did note, though, that it seems a lot of jobs being offered on it were ready to accept applicants from very different types of Engineering for what appeared to be the same position.. sort of interesting to consider the implications of this. (Electrical, Mechanical, and Chemical were often grouped together.. very different courses of study!)

I'm beginning to believe that direct contacts and those through the department and career fairs may be the best bet as my Internet-based results have been relatively poor. (Maybe I'm just searching poorly?)
