There's a lot to be said for using a toy that you made yourself. I personally won't use a flogger that somebody else made. However, even if you don't have the 'do it yourself' mentality, having a flogger that you made with your own hands will give you a much better appreciation for the work and skill that goes into making the good ones. And besides, once you have the tools and the knowhow, 50$ worth of materials can build a damned nice flogger. A lot nicer than anything you can buy for 50$. Just start out with reasonable expectaions. You won't build that perfectly balanced 5 pound monster flogger with the 32 plait braided handle and 5 pass 6 bight pinapple knots your first time around. Everybody has to start at the bottom of the learning curve. There are some great resources out there for people wanting to learn to build their own toys. Yeah, it's fairly simple stuff. No fancy knotwork and simple designs that probably don't balance all that well, but we all have to start somewhere. Check out Sartan's site, and the Frugal Domme. I teach people to build floggers all the time. People ask me if I'm afraid that it'll hurt my sales, and my answer is the people who know more about floggers are the only ones that will pony up 2 bills plus for my work.
