Knives are definitely masculine.
Men who use them are sexy.
Men who use them on me are even sexier.

I have been told that men carry knives because they are a secret source of hidden power. My Master always has a knife on him and it is very handy.

I have noticed that people who are into knife collecting/owning started at a very early age.

I think that another interesting poll would be what age did you desire your first knife .

Actually, I started with broken beer bottles but found that knives were so much easier to carry and use [8D]

And yes, sadly...that is where my love of knives came from.

Aneirin -> RE: Is a knife male or female? (1/6/2008 7:36:02 PM)

Apparently, there exists a Scandinavian proverb;

A knifeless man is a lifeless man

They being kind of keen on blades judging by the amount of people who carry them in public.Workmen of all kinds wearing their super practical work uniforms adorned with a fixed blade knife, everyone from gardeners to builders, it is just a tool.

They even have a special knife for cleaning and cutting wild mushrooms which Sweden I know goes nuts for at a certain time of year.

I do like the Scandinavian knives though, simple, unguarded and razor sharp.Oddly the Solingen steel on my straight razor is of Swedish origin, it itself is German, but I bought it on ebay, from the US and is a wonderful daily shaver.

once another lifetime ago, LordFallcon and i were going to go and look at a sword.  at his wishes, i was wearing a very feminine sundress and sandals....we got to the shop, and he asked to see the blade.  the salesman was talking to *him* and ignoring me.  (after all, what does a girlygirl know?)

LordFallcon hands the sword to me, i take it out, look at the blade, check the balance, and reject that one, and ask to see a different one.  that one passed muster, and was the one he purchased.  looks can be decieving

kitten who generally has a blade on her somewhere.

So, I ask here, is blade interest more male than female..?

An interest in blades tends to attract males more than females,
but there are many exceptions, myself being one of them.

And so the thought went on, is a blade a measure of manhood?

Yes

What do others think, those with blades....no, I am not going to go there on that?

I like knives, daggers, swords, etc.

The question, is a knife more likely to be in the possesion of a male or female?

That depends on the purpose of the blade; cooking, gardening, magical rituals, work tool, weapon, etc.

Are there any female collectors or bladesmiths?

Yes, of course there are female collectors and bladesmiths.

My observations so far that it is the males of our species that seem to hold more of a fascination with these objects, as I know very few women that hold such an interest.

Bladesmiths, they too as far as I can discern are largely male, even in this modern society where anyone can be what they want to be.

I've been collecting everything from Loveless to Scagel to Lake for the last twenty-five years.

For me, a handmade knife is a master work of art, to be looked at and admired. And I don't think its male or female; rather more like Calvin Klein's ''Unisex''

As for a tool / weapon : I'll use something far less magnificent--- my fists.....but if I have to pick something ''man-made'' , I'd go with a 34 inch aluminum softball bat over a knife.

Here is a beautiful fighter made by an ABS mastersmith that I picked up last week---I purchased it instead of a plasma television as a late Christmas gift to myself. ; }

Interesting question.

I like knives. I collect them, I use them, I like them used on me in a variety of situations. I don't, however, make them.

Why do I like knives?
When I pick up a knife, the feel of power is overwhelming. It gives me a sense of peace, of calm, of excitement....I 'react' to knives better than I do to guns [8D] It's a part of me, and I am a part of the knife; if that makes any sense.

I collect them because knives can tell a story.

I like having them used on me because of the feeling of danger that is associated with having a blade held to your neck and knowing that if you move; one wrong small step in any direction; that the blade can take your life; whether by accident or by design.

Mmmm...I just love knives.

I KEPT the Knife...........:)

DomMeinCT -> RE: Is a knife male or female? (1/7/2008 5:25:12 PM)

I've never given any thought to the gender of a knife, but I've owned Swiss Army knives for years, keep them in the car and purse.  Fixed a leaking gas line in the middle of nowhere in Mexico with one once and learned to never be without one, if I can help it.

And there's absolutely nothing like a razor sharp, well-balanced chef's knife that fits your hand for cooking prep work.

Actually, stephann, in spanish knife is "cuchillo". El cuchillo, technically, and it is male. However, some blades are designated "la cuchilla", for example, daggers, and are female.

D'oh,

Show's what happens when you don't use a language.  I mixed up knife with spoon.

Thanks for the correction.  I'll point out that 'la fila' is what the edge of a blade is called, though.  Naturally, that which actually does the cutting needs to be female...

I say it's female, but then again I'm a bit of an amazon.[:D]

Aneirin -> RE: Is a knife male or female? (1/8/2008 11:42:18 AM)

Amazons, the archetypal warrior woman, ever since the likes of ; '' Red Sonja '', I have always been impressed by a woman that can use a blade. Here, come to think of it, I wonder if that is where my liking for the red haired amazon came from. I knew one once and was unfortunate enough to fight her in an SCA event before becoming friends, she broke my shield, her sword smashed the oak spine, which the crowd loved even though they got a few bits of the oak.

I posted this question elsewhere this morning, on a custom knife forum I use and came up with an answer I knew, but thought was only my twisted mind that thought that way. That way being a male interest in knives is because a knife blade is a phallic symbol and males are naturally attracted to blades, it's a macho thing perhaps, maybe even a compensator for some.

And so the thought went on, is a blade a measure of manhood?

My Owner is a lot more interested in bladed weaponry than I am, and she does know how to use quite a bit of them.  She collects them, on a small levle, and she's trained in their use.

In western mystical traditions knives and swords are masculine, being associated with air and the analytical mind.

I miss rattan fighting, but my local SCA chapter sucks so I larp with the boffer crowd these days.

Anyhow, that's not a blade, that's a stick.  [;)]

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Is a knife male or female? (1/8/2008 4:44:22 PM)

I like knives, but I don't really own lots of them.  I have a folding knife I carry for utilitarian purposes and fishing.  I won't buy cheap knives; just like I won't buy cheap guns.  I have never really understood people who want to learn swordmanship.  A sword is a archaic weapon, and they are completely useless against firearms.  They just have no use in the modern world.  I do see the beauty in the craftsmanship, and I do like seeing them in museums.  But I don't really see the need to own a sword, or the need to learn to use one.
