my 17 year old is fascinated with swords and collects them for their beauty and craftsmanship...it is the same principle of owning antique cars or whatever...you do it for the beauty and appreciation of the object, whatever it is.  it doesnt' matter what the usefulness in "modern day" is...if it makes the person happy, then so be it.    the usefulness of a sword against a firearm has never been an issue of  his...it is just something that simply brings him joy, and that is one of the most wonderful things that a person can discover in a lifetime.

yeppers.. my son is the same.. I have a picture of him at a Medieval faire being "knighted" by some guy with a sword...

*snickers* my son was with the group kneeling, the guy came up with the sword, and my then 8 year old looked at it, took it, and said "is this Pakastani" I was so proud.. and told him to give the nice man his sword back. LOL

You gotta love kids that grow up in the SCA.

and no.. he doesnt get to take his swords ( except the wood ones) out and about.

But Mommie does.. *WEG*

Gwyn,
who happens to be one of those red headed amazons... with a horse, and swords.

I like knives, but I don't really own lots of them.  I have a folding knife I carry for utilitarian purposes and fishing.  I won't buy cheap knives; just like I won't buy cheap guns.  I have never really understood people who want to learn swordmanship.  A sword is a archaic weapon, and they are completely useless against firearms.  They just have no use in the modern world.  I do see the beauty in the craftsmanship, and I do like seeing them in museums.  But I don't really see the need to own a sword, or the need to learn to use one.

Excerise, enjoyment of the activity, the beauty in the style of fighting, keeping tradition alive and knowing that when I run out of bullets I have a back up option. I know of more than one person who has defended themselves successfully with a sword.

Knives, sword .... all blades are beautiful and make me shiver with delight.... there is nothing that equals the feeling of holding a well made ... well balanced blade in my hand.

I understand the exercise part (even hough I don't see a lot of SCA people that are in great shape.), and the dungeons and dragonsesque role playing that people like to do at SCA events.  I think it's sort of dorky (like dressing up in Star Trek uniforms), but to each his own.  It is just hard for me to keep from laughing, when I go over to someone's house and it's adorned with cheap swords and tacky paintings of fairies and wizards.

I do have some serious doubts about you having many friends that have defended themselves with swords.  In fact, I suspect that is a fantasy on your part.  I just don't see a lot of people toting swords around town.  I really don't see an intelligent person carrying a sword around as a backup weapon to a firearm.  I am sorry, but that would be beyond moronic.

*Shrugs* You don't have to believe me. Most people I know don't tote guns or swords. Attacks can happen in people's own homes ya know and there was the wonderful time someone actually tried to mug someone while they packed their things up from a Ren Fair. Also, if you think SCA are the only people who learn sword use you are sadly mistaken. I train in sword use in martial arts, not SCA.

Quite frankly, having nothing to use when you run out of bullets seems pretty moronic to me. The box of ammo doesn't magically refill after all.

A gun, is a point and shoot weapon, no skill is needed, therefore anyone can usethem and to be honest as a weapon, it would be easier to use from the killing point of view i.e. distance from the target, the nitty gritty and gore is avoided thus making it easy to do.

Swords, are heavy and pretty useless in the wrong hands, they speak of ages passed and carry a romanticism. As a weapon, close quarter fighting, death becomes very real and the likelyhood of the opponent being similarly armed, death by sword, is not a very nice prospect.Swords carry a large degree of barbarism.

Note how when an incident is reported on the news about a killing with a sword, there is horror at those reporting and receiving the news, a shooting with a gun, well it's a common occurance.

Guns, well, I can shoot, have shot, both pistol and self loading rifle, they hold no interest, dirty smelly things that need constant cleaning, and from time to time suffer negligible discharges, so hardly reliable, a machine to do the job. They have one use though, when the bullets are gone, they make a good club-junk.

I see that there are many of us that love blades for a variety of reasons .. but we seem to have strayed from the question of if the interest is more male or female oriented.

I personally would venture a guess that females have a deeper love of them .. and would say it comes from the Goddess .... however it is my opinion and not based on any facts.

I do not see where the love of blades means you collect cheap blades and have tacky pictures in your home... I have been in many homes with cheap decor and tacky pictures that had no blades in sight <wink>

A couple of my current projects;

http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k313/dreamsofobsidian/wiccakniv-1.jpg

Largely complete, except for decoration, which will be inlaid silver on the darker knife and inlaid brass on the lighter knife and of course the silver fittings for the scabbard shown.

Hey A - have you got a photograph of the one you made for me?  I don't have one online at the moment.
Miss Harlet - I highly recommend his work.  He made me a great set of talons for fingertips too.

Ooo, those are lovely! I'm dying for a good bodice knife but all the ones I've seen are either not well made or done in a fantasy style with huge spiders. I want something elegant that I can actually put in my bodice!

I know! I love the top one because it has a sheath - If it didn't I would worry about stabbing myself!

You can always wrap a blade in a chamois purchased on an auto parts store that is meant to dry cars with.   I have made sheaths from them for bodice blades when I had nothing else .. but the sheath is much much nicer !!!
