What is the difference between punishment and discipline?

RoughFN -> RE: In your opinion (1/6/2008 9:22:12 AM)

First thing that came to mind is that discipline is the preventative measure, punishment is the punitive one.

SirMIkeSD -> RE: In your opinion (1/6/2008 9:22:20 AM)

For me discipline is the process of enforcing or willingness to enforce a set of rules/standards/protocol to maintain the desired behaviour.

Punishment is what is enacted to correct a behaviour when needed.

Poorly worded question, in my view, because there is no consensus on a distinction (presuming one exists).

Within the context of your relationship and how you define it for yourself (or within the context of my relationship and how I define it for myself), there is no "matter of opinion"... it's simply factual within each of our dynamics.

Discipline is the ability to act appropriately or the act of acting appropriately. Punishment is what happens when discipline fails. My opinion.

Discipline is controlled behavior. Punishment is one way (among many) which are used to attain controlled behavior.

Discipline is where I pull the girl into line for a bit of attitude or even brattiness etc.  It's even a way for her to initiate Power Exchange - up to a point....  The opportunity to discipline is something I generally enjoy - we both do!

Punishment is when she goes too far and her actions actually make me angry.  On the very *rare* occasions that happens, I don't want her anywhere near me and she's despatched to the corner while I cool down.  I loathe punishment - we both do!

Punishment usually stems from the need for too much discipline but that transition doesn't require a genius to discern.  There's no mistaking when my temperature begins to rise so she really has no excuse...!

Tying her up and giving her a good flogging, for eg, is neither punishment or discipline but merely an activity I enjoy - we both do!

And if I'm enjoying, I can hardly be said to be angry.  And if I was, then it couldn't be happening while she's over in the corner by herself - you follow?  :-)

Focus.

To us punishment is something we do in play and discipline is something done for an infraction of some kind. Discipline is not a pleasurable  thing and I avoid it as much as I can. [:D]

I personally use punishment and discipline interchangeably, so with me there is no distinction.  They are both used to teach someone what is Good, and what is not

slaveluci -> RE: In your opinion (1/7/2008 6:16:15 AM)

I liked the answers RoughFN and LA gave.  For me, discipline is the process by which I avoid punishment.  If I exhibit self-discipline and live by the expectations that are set forth in my particular relationship, punishment won't need to result.  Only when I fail to exhibit said discipline and end up doing something wrong/unacceptable, does the act of punishment result.  (Or if I end up NOT doing something I am expected to).  Fortunately, such behavior has occurred very rarely in the past and doesn't occur at all these days.  Thus, there is lots of discipline in my life and therefore very, very little punishment.  That's a good thing[:D]...........luci
