How many people in the lifestyle are dancers? Having been in a college dance department for years, we saw an underlying masochism in most dancers, particularly in ballet.

Are there other ballet dancers on Collarme? If so, do you incorporate dance into your lifestyle?

...i'm not sure it's just dancers. i think it may be performers in general. While i'm sure there are exceptions, perhaps the act of stepping onto a stage requires a modicum of masochism.

I've noticed that many dancers are submissive.

I am even going to go so far as to say most people in the entertainment industry.....actors, muscians, dancers etc..... especially those that give the public persona of being the opposite.

At least those I have met.

I actually get a huge Dom rush when Playing music.  Sometimes I am even blessed enough to have people dancing, and I feel like a puppet master.  The dancers literally submit thier bodies (and sometimes thier minds) to the music.  I can hit a hard chord durring a mellow part and literally see the dancers all react.  Take them up or down with my playing.  You can see in the faces that they are in a state that isn't "subspace" but is closley related.  And the massive power exchange field that gets formed.  I guess I consider dancers to be somewhat Submisive.

Of course if I perform for a few hours, my hands, back and voice are sore, and I like the feeling.  But if that makes one a masochist, then any strenuos /athletics/difficult activity does.  And I don't think that is the right use of the word "masochist".

But I do think that Masochism and Submission is more common in Dancers than the general public.  Several studies have shown that creative (musical, performance, literature) people have more sex and are more creative in it.

greetings widowspiders,

i've danced for several years, although never professionally. ballet, jazz, hip hop, lyrical mostly with a little modern and bellydance. i love it, but due to my health do not get to do very much anymore. i keep promising him i will dance for him but i am very self-conscious about it - that's the closest i've gotten to incorporating dance into the lifestyle (although i really love gorean slave dance and would like to choreograph some things like that).

and yes, speaking as a ballet dancer, it does require a healthy dose of masochism.

respectfully,
annabelle.

I'm a former professional dancer. I am not a masochist. Nor am I a sadist. Though I am and have been Dom.

I have always thought that ballroom dance , particularly latin with its"man leads and woman follows is very Dom/sub. especially the tango and the pasa doble. Maybe the rumba with woman as seductress is more fem Dom? Either way, I like the pagentry, rules and formality of assigned roles. very sexy, very passionate.

Whenever I try on my pointe shoes after years of not dancing, I realize that I must have been a masochist for a few days, anyway!

I majored in Movement Theatre in college (yeah, you can get a degree in that!) and took many dance classes as a result, but mostly Modern.

I dance..used to dance.  Haven't done it in years, but heading back to class next week.  I'll probably need six months before I can make it back on pointe.  Ahhh the lovely sight of calluses and bloody toenails.

While I don't dance professionally, I love dancing and plan to learn all kinds (studying Bellydance right now). And I think - after watching shows like So You Think You Can Dance and Dancing With the Stars, and movies/documentaries - that to have to work that hard, that many hours a day, over and over, practice, practice, etc..... Just after seeing how much professional dancers give, I can see some hints of S&M.

I am a professional Ballroom dancer and teacher, World Champion in 2002, studied ballet for years.  There is a lot in common between D/s and Ballroom dance...I want to give a lecture on that someday.

I suck at dancing.

I have this internal rhythm, but it appears to only work for the singing...I can keep any rhythm in my head, but can't move it to my feet or body.

I think I'd give my soul to be a good dancer.
