BoundForFun -> Weight Loss (1/7/2008 8:21:28 PM)

At the start... of the new year, my resolution (like many others) was to lose weight. My overall goal is to lose 80lbs. altogether so I can reach my ideal weight of 195lbs. I pledged I would start eating healthier, exercise a lot more, and take a men‘s formulated multivitamin. I plan to only lose about 5lbs. Every week taking about 16 weeks/4 months to accomplish my goal as long I don’t hit a plateau.

Well I weighed myself for a starting weight of 275lbs., with the height of 6’2”, which gives me a rough body fat percentage estimate of 31.2% which puts me in the high/obese range. For my age the normal body fat range is 8-19 percent.

Its been a week and the only thing I did so far was start eating healthier and I lost 6lbs.! Today I ran a half a mile which killed me, considering I was in the Army and could run 2 no problem…

My weight is now 269lbs., with the height of 6’2”, which gives me a rough body fat percentage estimate of 30.3%

I’m only 92.5% away from meeting my overall goal!

How can you determine your fat percentage without some form of body composition analysis?  I had that done on a cruise a few years ago and was surprised at how  high my lean body mass was even though i was still overweight.

Way to go, you're off to a good start.  You might want to join the discussion on this thread:  High Protein, Low Carb Diet

Those height/weight body-fat calculators only work if you have the average fat to muscle ratio of the guys they used to come up with the test.

You're much better off comparing your weight to your athletic performance.  I.e. if you gain 10 more lbs, but going up with all the weights you lift, then the 10lb gain is probably muscle not fat.

Likewise, if you lose weight and feel weaker with your workouts, then you probably lost some muscle instead of fat.
