I suppose the issue which has me the most confused is the dominatrix / mistress / fendom thing, until last night, i thought they were all the same, but after spending all night reading profiles, i seem to has discovered some slight variations, eg a dominatrix is more likly to own paddles, a femdom owns a strap on, and the mistresses has the nicest shoes !, are there some more differences here that i should know about ? how will i will which is for me ?

I am a Mistress, a Domme, a Domina, a Dominatrix, an Owner and a Femdom!

The only "real" difference is which name the lady prefers.

In some parts of the world, a pro-domme is called a Mistress or Dominatrix so the non-professionals prefer something else - but the practice varies

 Just happily go along with whatever preference the dominant female has (until she changes her mind ....[:D])

I'm none of the words that you use.

I am one slave's Mistress at this time.

I am a dominant who happens to be female so femdom might work though not in any stereotypical way one encounters in porn.

Words like dominatrix and domme simply annoy me because I don't see the need to divide up dominant or submissive people via gendered endings.

Dominatrix, Domina, Domme, Mistress, Goddess, FemDom all equal FEMALE DOMINATION
I would suggest that you move away from trying to categorize them and move towards just finding out if your interests are compatable with the particular individual you are getting to know. 
Now matter what a female dominant may call herself, each will be unique with her own interests, skills, and requirements.
Focus on the individual Dominant, not the groups of them you have compartmentalized in your mind.

I dislike labels intensely and TammyJo I agree entirely with why you dislike them. Especially the one's which gender qualify someone. I see myself thusly.

1. A Human Being

2. A Woman

3. An Owner/ wife, daughter, sister and friend

4. A Dominant

5. A Writer, a professional in my position of employment, etc.

One will nearly always see me refer to myself as a Dominant when speaking of where I see myself within my alternative lifestyle. I am nobody's Mistress as I am the one and only. I have always used the term Dominant of which there are males and females. Dominatrix always smacked vaguely to me of sessions, paid for or not, or a bad porn flick. Either way and anyway all of the above terms in the OP are gender specific and I never did get that entirely..The above list is simply parts of who I am though they are the salient points of me. Perhaps #3 and #4 could be swapped as Dominant is my personality structure and is much the same whether I am an owner or a friend. I am strong and that is always there, up front and a significant part of me.

Different titles mean different things to different people. Don't judge somoene by what YOU think their title means...'cause I'm betting, in a lot of cases, you'd be wrong.

I do not judge anyone though I will absolutely state what my truth is for me. I have no clue what other's truths are to them.
