Apparently two 75 year olds have been charged as well.

Hmm... odd... I never would have expected the majority of people apprehended for, "street racing," to be males in their early 20's. Who'd have thought?

The funniest part has got to be the fact that after the 85 y/os vehicle was impounded, the officer gave him a ride to the bank (one of the places he was headed that day). Guess he's got a new use for the money he's got in his savings account... paying the hefty fine. Still, police in Canada must be a LOT nicer than police in the United States.

He was not  street car racing, he was simply driving on the highway going 61 kilometers per hour over the speed limit which is pretty common to see on the 400 series highways here,   which anything over 50 is an automatic suspension of your licence and car impounded   and a minimum $2000 dollar fine.  I know I am guilty of doing that myself especially on the back highways at night when I am going to work I am only see  1 or 2 cars on the drive, I will often be doing the 120 in the 80, but will pass thru a tiny  town which the speed limit is 50  and I won't realize I have passed the town, as I may be day dreaming instead ...which would put me 70 over    With this new law though,  I am going to really have to smarten up or start setting the cruise control to ensure I am not going to be doing over the 50 if my mind wanders

And as a teen I used to do my share of street racing with a 1970 plymouth fury III, could often beat the corvettes, mustangs  and transAMs on the shorter stretches between traffic lights because it had better weight distribution so I could get the jump start while they are still sitting in one spot spinning their tires, but the streets were no where as busy as they are nowadays in the bigger cities

I dont know if this is in the works now or not but i heard over the radio street racers now face $10,000 fine, loss of car, loss of license, jail time.

Speeding tickets 50 clicks over lose car(for a week), suspended license(not a loss of), 5 or 6 points off (i know this one cause i was in a car while the driver was stopped as we were going to the casino on derry rd on a sunday), $700 fine.  this happened about 4 years ago though.

It came into effect 3 months ago, for 50 KM over,  it is an automatic loss of licence(meaning you lose all demerit points after 6 months or whatever, you have to reapply for a licence as a beginner all over again,  and vehicle is impounded  and the minimum fine is $2,000 but is increase by every so many clicks over,

for street drag racing may very well be $10,000 because it is taking place on city streets  so fines are higher also involves more than just speeding it,  also include reckless endangerment and I am sure a number of other charges as well

I did it myself, zoomed by a cruiser parked on the other side of the road with a very wide center median   was night time and it was not till I passed him and he put his lights on was I aware he was there, only thing that really made me decide to try to avoid the ticket was the fact it was freezing rain and the roads where iced over, so I knew he could not get turn around in time, actually he realized it to and gave up the chase  up very quickly, so I  just slowed down to just below the speed limit once I seen he was no longer following knowing even if he called ahead for another cruiser to stop me down the road for speeding,  being night time he could not prove the car he was chasing was mine so they would have no reason to stop me.....weird thing is how the   automatic mental calculations  went  on  in my head at the time

I have been damn lucky stopped only twice for speeding  was let go with a warning but never ticketed in  the 32 years I have been driving .....knock on wood... my luck continues... but I know I have to get the lead of my shoes as wellI would hate to ever be responsible for someone else getting hurt because of my actions

I don't recall saying anywhere in my original post that he was apprehended FOR street racing... just that he was apprehended under a law created specifically to deter street racing.

Do have to say that the cops specially on the 400 series here around T.O. seem to be a lot friendlier than others I have met. But then again it also depends on your attitude, altho telling them you are english and thought the posted 100 was in mph than kph doesnt work. Specially when they find out you have lived here 20 years....hey it was worth a try?
