Suzykeu -> Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/8/2008 8:03:15 PM)

i've been hiccuping for an hour now, can anybody help?

It is usually a spasm of the diaphram. Find something like a chair with a low back, or something that you will be able to arch your back over. Now take a deep breath and let it out slowly as you arch your back against some reisistance. This should stretch your diaphram out and relieve the spasm. It works every time if done properly. My Tai Chi teacher taught it to me.

Slowly drinking a tall glass of water down (nonstop) usually works for me.

Boo!

Sorry.  I couldn't resist.

Seriously, I've heard dozens of folk remedies (pull your ears, breath through only one nostril, etc) but I have never found one that works.  I've noticed that when I have the hiccups If I distract myself (reading, music) they'll usually go away and I won't even notice it at first.  I wish I could be more help.  If you're still hicupping tommorow morning - see a doctor.

Best wishes,

Marc2b

My usual cure wasn't available (spoonfull of pickle juice), so thank you all ^_^

A teaspoon of sugar is effective too, something about that swallowing action. [;)]

I'm glad I could help. [:D]

I kid you not.

Apprantly the Israelies discovered that slow gentle ahem
"digital anal massage" will relax a nerve connected to
the vertebra and that nerve is in the exact right spot
to stop the actual nerve controlling and stimulating
the hiccups. Insert a finger gentley and slowly rotate
to excite the area and bingo :)

Some Texas teenager had this applied professionally ( ? )
and within 20 minutes the 2 months episode concluded.

Something to be learned here but I wish I could find it >:)

Tilt your head back as far as you can. Take a deep breath and hold for a good 10 count. Repeat if needed but I've never had to do so.

mistoferin -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/8/2008 8:38:48 PM)

Old bar trick and I've never, ever seen it fail....a double shot of straight lemon juice drank in one gulp.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/8/2008 8:59:50 PM)

My never fail trick is to gulp a glass of cold orange juice quickly without stopping.

As far as I can figure, you get the water forcing the air around, the gulping to help work the diaphragm, and the cold to help shock the system.  Sugar everyone says works.

I've had it work with other liquids, but cold OJ seems to be more efficient.

I'm the type who get random solitary hiccups through the day and then one day every few months will get hiccups all day long.  For years, my juice trick has always stopped them immediately.

DefiantFlower -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/8/2008 10:13:00 PM)

This doesn't really work with just yourself, but it might help someone. Whenever my friends have the hiccups, I ask them what they had for their last meal. Then what they had for dinner the night previous, and the lunch before that if necessary, etc. The distraction of having to sit and think about it usually helps. But that's if holding your breath doesn't work, or you don't have something to drink or a chair to bend back in.

You're right. I've used this technique for many years, and have found it amazingly effective.

Aneirin -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/9/2008 12:10:30 AM)

This works for me, take a breath of air and hold as if you were going to force a burp, wait until the hiccup comes, then force the burp air down.Usually you get a burp, but the hiccup has gone.

brightspot -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/9/2008 12:32:09 AM)

This has always been fail proof for me;
When you begin having a hiccup run, stop
and think of seven bald men[:D], I kid you not
it works everytime.

Breathing exercises - like in meditation books, and clearing the mind to focus on the breathing is what I have found to work well.

But I like some of the other ideas here!

Its always made me wonder, what training special forces might get to deal with hiccups........ they must have something really good for it, 'cause after all you dont want to be creeping up on some baddie and start hiccuping, do you? And if you did, you dont want to ask the baddie to stay where he is and ignore you for a while as you drink something down or whatever.

If scaring works, how could a Special Forces soldier ever get the hiccups in the first place, if they were in close proximity to a "baddie"

He'd be afraid that the other guys in his squad would kill him, if nothing else

LadyEllen -> RE: Does anybody know how to get rid of Hiccups? (1/9/2008 6:47:18 AM)

Good point Sanity.......

But does hiccupping in time of war constitute an offence so serious that a court martial in the field like this would be acceptable?
