Howdy

Who here is using or has used Google Talk?

I think its pretty good. Its small, neat and exactly what an IM client should be.

For those that dont know

Does GoogleTalk monitor your conversations and toss in advertising links? I know they do that with Gmail, which is Google's email service.

No advertisments.

Could you direct me to more info about this? I have a Gmail account, I've never gotten any advertisements or spam on that account but it's actually the "monitor conversations" bit that sounds creepy...

Under the Patriot Act, most communication gets monitored these days

Yes, it sounds creepy but since it is all automated I don't worry about it.

Not all of my gmail messages have advertising links, but those which do appear on the right hand side of the message under the header "Sponsored Links'.

For example, there is a weekly statewide chat tonight for folks who are involved with Iowa BDSM munch groups. The sponsored links that accompanied this message are for www.free2minglechat.com, www.eWoss.com, and www.BBPeopleMeet.com . Clearly the links were keyed to the word 'chat' which appeared in the message.

To give you an example of how dumb the automated monitoring is, my gmail name includes the word 'blue' so I often get links which are clearly oriented towards black Americans (even though I am not African-American).

So I think gmail is a safe service to use. And kingrichard is right, most email traffic gets automatically checked for certain words and phrases. Its a legacy of 9/11.

Thanks KR and onceburned... I guess I'll keep my account. Good to keep in mind, though.
Living in Italy I tend to avoid thinking about these things, but of course with the Internet it affects everyone, anywhere.

Which is precisely what all the other email services do as well. The only thing different about Google's Gmail is that they tell you upfront all about it. That and they also try to make the "ads" as discreet as possible. I rarely if ever notice that tiny little line on mine that has "topic relevant" links. Google is the most honest company out there these days, and they know damn well they cannot exist without advertising, but they make sure it doesn't take up a whole screen like Yahoo and several other site do. Yahoo messenger has advertisements, but GoogleTalk does not.

I'll stick with the ones that don't keep secrets.

Yes, I have a Gmail account AND GoogleTalk. (MsPurrmeow)
