I'm getting ready to start working on some outfits for an event I will be going to, and I need some sewing advice.  The first fabric I am working with is a somewhat stretchy cotton material.  Any advice on the best way to cut this to pattern would be fantastic! Thanks!

how much does it stretch? if not much. I'd tack it down and cut it then...but I am no expert.

It's maybe moderately stretchy.  I'm afraid if I stretch it out to cut it that it will shrink back and not be big enough.

You can't stretch it.  Pin it or clothespin it at frequent intervals.  Use very sharp scissors and go slowly. If it won't snag, pin in the field also.  Test both ball needles and sharps in your machine on a scrap (ball is for knits, but some knits like the sharp needles better).

Have you done sewing before? If not, a stretchy material is not the best choice for a beginner.

I have been sewing for years and years and still abhor working with stretch fabric. I want a serger soooo badly.

go to the sewing forums at gardenweb dot com. Whenever I get the crazy urge to sew, I go there and begin reading, and then I realize that it's much more complicated than I thought.

(I failed sewing in high school...)

I have been sewing for a while, otherwise I would not be attempting such a project.  And thanks, I'll check out that website.

I wonder if you couldnt make a paste of flour and water, or if you got bucks use rubber cement, and paste the pattern to the cloth to keep the stretch to a minimum, and then wash it out after assembly........

Argh Argh Argh

There is temporary stabilizer that washes out when you don't need it anymore, but I couldn't recommend it without seeing the pattern and feeling the fabric.

I agree...I love my serger for all things stretchy...

As for knits (stretchy things), you've gotta be super careful when stitching it up or the whole prject may end up all wopped out and frilly on the edges...the tension on the machine has to be right or the feed dogs will grip too tightly and make a mess of things...

Good luck honey!
