summerblossom -> Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 10:39:58 AM)

I wasn't sure if I should have posted this here or in the Health section.

Anyways my question is this but for people that know a thing about health and fitness and nutrition  only.

I have started to get serious about my weight and health about a month and a half ago and started to do exercise. I started at 5 minutes, than went to 10, and now I do at least 15 minutes 6 days a week. I have changed my eating habbits with more fruits, less fat and calories etc too My problem is this...the exercise is not getting easier like people say it is supposed to, in fact it seems like it is getting harder everyday and my calf muscles keep burning and cramping. I do stretch them out before I exercise but it doesnt seem to help. Also my energy level  is going down. I get enough sleep. But this is discouraging because I've been working my butt off.

In general when going out I do have better stamina but my workouts are like struggling so hard... I don't get that 'high' people talk about either. any suggestions would be appreciated

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 10:53:17 AM)

whatever your doing if it gets harder it is likely your not doing it correctly.

i do my regular routine every night of crunches and stretches...i cant do anything else because i cant do cardio due to heart condition.  ive done the same routine now for almost 10 years.  20 mins every night sometimes twice in a night if i eat any junk food.

i always do it before bed because you lose the most weight when you sleep.  i also heard it is good to do it right when you wake up.  although when i wake up i have zero energy with my heart condition..so i generally need to eat first and wait a few hours after.

it is good to see more and more people wanting to change their appearance.  it is healthy for the mind as well.  exercise and diet take time...1999 i was 196 lbs.  2004 i was 125 lbs.  major reason for the loss is the junk and soda pop.  change that to good food and water.  i am 135 right now..i dont think i can get much lower due to my age and height.

Look, you are not giving enough healing time, what happens is as you exercise your muscles tear, and they need time to heal.

Do legs one day, belly another, arms another, back another. give each muscle group as much rest betwixt times.

Now for each muscle set exercised start with the biggest first, that is, Butt then thunderthighs and then smaller calf muscles.......arms?  shoulders, triceps, then biceps then forearms.............wear out the big muscles so they cant help as much with taking over for the small muscles.

Abs can be done every day, but back and abs kinda work together and if you are weighty  and new maybe start out giving them a day apeice rest.

And walking works all of the muscles.

luckydog1 -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:03:38 AM)

There are a lot of questions to answer before you can get any relevant advice.  What kind of shape are you in now, what are your goals, and what sort of exercise do you want to do?  All three are related and affect the other 2.

As a  general note, it is probably better to do longer workouts that are nto as hard.  It is better (sepecially when starting out/ are very out of shape) for example to do 50 reps with just a bar or relativly low wieght, than to do 5 lifts of your body weight.  Or Jog/power walk for half hour than run sprints for 5 minutes.

You might consider doing your workout one day, the doing a full yoga/tai chi class the  next, then Workout, then Yoga,ect.   So your workouts are not back to back.  That would likley help with the cramping and lack of energy.

But I am no expert on these things, and your paticular situation and goals matter A LOT to these answers, so you should get some real world advice.  Do you belong to a gym?  They always have people who can help you craft a realistic, effective plan.

ArgoGeorgia -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:03:44 AM)

I usually workout 5 days a week, sometimes 6 if I am playing tennis.  But I always give myself at least one day off per week.  However, over the holidays I took a bit of a holiday and after only a few weeks of slacking, I've found that even that is too much.  You might want to consider upping the amount of time you do in a single day (really, 15 minutes is the minimum for aerobic gains) and then just doing it every other day.  Once you hit 30 minutes without difficulty, then try doing two days on, one day off.  When you are doing your exercise, what exactly are you doing?  It sounds like some sort of aerobic activity like running, walking, elliptical, etc.  Your calves will definitely burn if you are not used to it, but it will come.

Also, and this tends to shock many people, but most sports medicine folks now say not to stretch before you exercise, but rather after.  It is ok to 'warm-up' with maybe a little light stretching, but it is more important to do good stretches after you workout to help keep your muscles from cramping up too much.

Finally, just another thought.  You might want to investigate how much protein you are getting.  Simply put - your muscles are made from protein and they can't repair themselves after exercise without it.  Kudos for upping the fruits and lowering the fat, but you should also monitor the protein intake.  Right now I track every single thing I eat (until I reach my designated goal) and I'm on 30% protein, 45% carbohydrate, and 25% fat.  And the fats I try to go for the healthier fats (things like nuts, olive oil, fish, etc).

No matter what, keep at it UNLESS you feel like you have really injured something.  And then go see a doc.

LaTigresse -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:03:55 AM)

Walk walk walk walk walk..........it is the best exercise I know.

mnottertail -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:04:29 AM)

No doubt, if you can walk, walk........15 minutes of walking is like 10 bazillion times more effective  and healthy than the 0 minutes that most are doing now.

Yes i agree i do my stretches after my crunches.

summerblossom, like most here have mentioned, its kind of hard to give great advice without knowing more details. What is your fitness level like now, your health. What are your goals? weightloss only? or increased muscle tone, or muscle bulk? What is your nutrition level at now, how much of what are you taking in? streatching is great but it can only do so much if you havent given your muscles time to heal from the last workout. Im with everyone else here, that walking is great, and cheap too..dont have to invest in any fancy equipment. swimming is great if you can and have access to a pool. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. sorry, but its an important thing to mention, can casue some pretty severe muscle pain without enough water while excersising.

Thank you!  I knew I forgot something.  That cannot be stressed enough.  if you are dehydrated, and exercising causes the body to lose a lot of water, you will hurt, you won't heal, and it will never get easier.  I learned this the hard way (if you've never had heat exhaustion, I don't recommend trying it).

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:16:29 AM)

I have been doing a power walking video at home. I can't really get to a gym right now for personal reasons. It has things in it like leg lifts, side steps, kicks, arm movements and stuff while walking fast in place.

Yeah right now im not in good shape, would rather not give my weight but I am very heavy and have never lived a healthy or active lifestyle. I guess my body just is stubborn.

I would rather do as much cardio as I can to actually loose some of the weight because I think exercise in general would be easier if I didin't have so much fat on me.

I understand what everyone is saying about giving it more of a rest, I guess I just watched those shows on tv like The Swan and Biggest Losers where they do like 2 hours of exercise like 5 days a week and I felt if I didin't keep going like day after day I wouldn't loose any weight reason being- A while back I had started loosing weight with diet and exercise but my weight loss was slower than most people , like a half a pound a week, and sometimes I even gained weight so it was discouraging because I wasn't cheating or anything.

mnottertail -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:19:23 AM)

Do not be alarmed and live and die by the scale, live by the mirror. And do not look every day, the thing is that muscle weighs more than fat, and as you start building muscle, you may actually GAIN weight........this ain't a bad thing at all...don't bother weighing yourself more than once a month, (ok, once a week if you have ocd) but don't worry about what the scale says.

Ron

ArgoGeorgia -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:24:08 AM)

Agreed with Ron.  I don't use a scale at all except once or twice a month.  I prefer to take measurements of various areas:  Neck, bicep, chest, waist (at bellybutton), hips (for women), thighs, calves.  For a while the scale never moved, and I was getting ticked off, until I realized my biceps and chest were increasing and my waist was decreasing - a lot.

And don't look at the biggest loser and all those shows.  It is so incredibly unhealthy to lose weight at that rate.  Most doctors feel that 2lbs a week is probably all you can and should lose in true weight.  Anything more is most likely water weight which fluctuates significantly.

luckydog1 -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 11:27:58 AM)

I am a big advocate of Yoga or Taichi.  Get a beginers video for one of those, and alternate it with your exercise video.  And like Mnot said don't worry about the daily reading on the scale.  Don't compare yourself to the hotties in the videos either.

And the water advice is crucial.

Like the guys above me have said, dont pay attention to what the scale says. weight is really no measurement for health. If you are doing the same video every single day, then you are continuously working the exact same muscles without giving them time to rest. Try doing the video every other day, with a nice regular walk on your off days. Your first few weeks of excersise will be your most dramatic weight loss, but even that may only be a pound or two, or could even be up to 7 or 8 if you lose alot of water weight, then it should slack off to somewhere between a 1/2 pound a week to 2 pounds a week. anything more is actually unhealthy. whenever you lose weight, all the "stuff" that was in your fat cells has to go somewhere, and its flushed out your system though your liver and other organs, can put quite a strain on them (all the more reason to keep drinking the water!!). Pay attention to what Argo said about muscle weighing more than fat. Years ago I had the same issue...kept dieting and working out and still gaining weight! Oh I was so depressed, started trying to starve myselve to get my body to lose weight till someone finally gave me that little fact. Ignore the scale and look at a mirror. the less you worry yourself about numbers, the less stress, the easier the weight loss. stress adds weight!

pay close attention to what you are actually getting in your diet. try to eat 5 or 6 small meals througout the day. you dont have to be so ocd that you start weighing everything you put in your mouth, but pay attention to getting a good variety. I know everyones first instinct is to eat more fruit, but veggies, lean meats, and beans and legumes are much more important, yes fruit is too..just dont overdo it I mean.

yes, cardio is better at plain old weight loss, but the more muscle you build, the faster your fat burns. try picking up a set of those resistance bands you can get even at walmart (they are fairly cheap) and incorporate them into the video, or light weight barbells to carry in your hands while walking. (personally even if they dont do anything its always helped me to make myself think im doing more, ya know?) the other thing you need to pay attention to, is the heavier you are, the worse high impact cardio excersises are on your joints, slower, low impact things like cycling and swimming can often be benificial.

support groups, online or off, can be great too. easier to stay motivated if you arent going at it all alone.

For Tai Chi I like Marshall Ho'o it is a VHS, made some years ago by Black Belt Magazine, sells cheap on eBay and is pretty easy to get for most libraries.  I think that nearly any Tai Chi vid is gonna be ok, but if you get one by Jang Jwing-Ming, for instance, that is a little heavy for a beginner.

Yoga? Don't know so much about.

Ron

Or if you are going to do this power walking thingie video, do only the legs part for 15 minutes one day, the arms portion the next and so on, working larger to smaller muscles.............in order

NewPleasures -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 12:48:58 PM)

I play a lot sports and just stay pretty active. I don't eat as healthy as I should so i try to make up for it by working out. Usually I run. I walk A LOT! I think the others are correct when they say that walking really helps. Right now i'm focusing on my stomach because I want my abs to come in so I do a lot of crunches. When I first started, it hurt a lot and like you are thinking now, I thought there was no progress but I slowly started to see more results. I think you should maybe tweak your work-out a bit in order to assure that you are getting the most out of it, but don't give up. It may be discouraging but just stay the course and you'll see some results.

NewPleasures -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 12:51:58 PM)

What areas should women measure to see if their work out is working?

summerblossom -> RE: Fitness/Exercise Help Please (1/9/2008 12:59:05 PM)

I have tried tai chi and I really don't like it but I tried yoga and love it so I think ill stick with that.
