Channel 4 just reported this

apparently a paper has been submitted in Parliament for the disestablishment of the Church of England - and quite by chance, the number it got in the running order was 666.

A sign? an omen? Or just a coincidence to what would be a great idea?

E

616 is the twue number of the beast, god I hate myself for using the word that doesn't exist!

(Edit: 4 spilling and stuff)

...longest word in the english language for a while. Means 'people who are against the people who are against the church being part of the British official establishment'

Pure coincidence.  Didn't you Brits have some sort of big fire in 1666?

Great Fire of London.......well spotted.....and the UK emergency number is 999, which is clearly the mark of the beast upside down......

Done us a favour really. In those days many of the houses in London were so close, that you could lean out of the window and touch the person oppossite. The fire helped stop the spread of the great plague that was sweeping Europe.

You only get so many opportunities to use that word in one lifetime, so I took it when it was there for the taking.

i think its still against the law tho for a roman catholic to hold office in england.

and i can't see it happening, coz like, the anglican church is i think, the 2nd biggest organised religion in the world, after the church of rome. and if the queen wozn't in charge, then who would be?

and wot would happen to all the churches it owned, and skools, and houses and charities?

i just think theres to much money involved... if the issue of god don't win the arguement for the church, then i'm sure money will, coz thats a religion wot even politicians understand. (even if they do accidently forget when somebody gives them £103,000!)

The Prime Minister can be a catholic - the Head of State (queen/king) can't.

You have to admire our political system as we're moving forward at such a rapid rate of knots: at this rate we'll be in the 18th century by 2057.

Interestingly enough, there are more church going catholics in England today than church going protestants, for the first time since the reformation - something like 860,000 to 840,000.

Did you know our bishops are appointed into our second house, and they have power to block law (supposedly the people's laws) passed in the House of Commons? So, we have a situation where one of the most secular nations on earth appoints bishops to oversee our desires.  You have to laugh. Then again, in the celebrity and consumer led Western world, there is no enlightened nation; the West is in desperate need of an enlightenment.

What  shame LadyEllen! The UK is losing its historical traditions one by one, where one day the British will wake up and realize they are no different than the USA and other countries, having lost all its peculiar centuries old British tradition that set it aside from other nations in the world. This is something that was established if I am not mistaken, before king Henry VIII. Maybe next they won't allow the Queen to open the session of Parliament? Awful!

Tradition - the dead governing the living.

It did sort of stop the spread of the plague, which was probably a good thing.

And the CofE was established by Henry VIII, partly cos he wanted a divorce fom Catherine of Aragon, partly cos he quite liked the idea of not sending lots of money to Rome all the time, and partly cos, well, redistributing the wealth of the monastries/abbies/convents/devout Catholics was a great way to win supporters and purge those he was less fond of.  It doesn't pre-date him, Kalif.

LadyE, there are Sikhs and Rabbis and Immams and some Hindu priests in Parliament.  Not as many as their are Bishops though.  But, the number of Bishops who automatically got a seat was reduced by Blair during the rejig of the Lords and hereditary peerages etc.

That man Blair did enough harm...destroying British traditions, nothign wrong with hereditary traditions...

Northern Gent, without tradition, we all become the same...everything is more boring. Tradition sets people and nations apart, as peculiar to themselves...

If not, then I guess we will all shop in Walmart and eat at MickeyD's...
Whatever happened to parliamentary traditions from centuries past? In my country that happened as well, which is also somewhat sad, but what traditions remain, we have kept, even through dictatorship.
