Scanning thru new posts - 8/25/2005 7:08:56 PM

Hi folks,

I was wondering if any of you know of a better way to handle this situation:

I log in once a day and usually there are 700-800 new posts waiting for me to peruse. I go to the bottom of the forum screen and click "posts since last visit". I then go to the very last post and work my way back to page 1 (that way I catch the new posts that are going up while I'm reading). The problem is I like to check all the topics, so just subscribing and only checking specific topics doesn't really do what I want (I don't think it would, anyhow..) Yet, I don't need to see each individual new post on a topic -- just that a topic *has* new posts since my last visit for me to check out. When I'm done with the reading of the posts (which takes a couple of hours, hence the need for this question), I reset my last visit time and log out.

Any alternate suggestions for ways to handle this more quickly are very welcome!

Thanks!

Edited to add: BTW, I don't read every single post, but I do like to check the topic lines then read the ones that sound interesting -- still takes me about 2 hours with the current method though.

My settings have it to bold any subject line that has new posts in it since my last check.

Sometimes I simply check all new posts by clicking Today's Posts and either look for members that i know i like to read or subject lines that sound intriguing to me.
Others I just go to General BDSM, Ask A Master/Sub, Health and Humor. There I see the highlighted ones ES2 spoke of above and can preview the start of the post by running my mouse over the title. I don't have the patience/interest in reading everything. You can also sort by Hot Topics, Subscriptions and even hunting down your favorite members posts by last 50/100. Hope this helps.

Mine defaulted to it...

I'm minimizing culture shock by sticking exclusively to the general board. That keeps things manageable and I don't have to spend an hour each day playing catch-up. }:D

Same here. I just hit my three favorite areas, scan through the highlighted ones, and occasionally search from a Members profile.

So many of the threads are overlapped that they get rather redundant. Usually even the answer are a bit repetitive, and the "usual suspects" say things that cover the issue. On the other hand, I do like commenting to people when they offer a comment that is very insightful.

Relax, have fun. Good luck. These forums are great, don't let them get you stressed.

I "subscribe" only to the Forums that interest me, and scan the others on occasion.

When I sign into Collarme, I then go directly to "My Forums" to read the ones I enjoy most. The latest messages are always highlighted.

Since I only recently began to read the Message Boards, I didn't think it feasible to catch-up on all threads, so after a few days of scanning the topics that caught my eye, I decided to just clear them all out, by marking the forums read, in all categories, so as to start fresh.

Using the "My Forums" feature, has cut down considerably, the time I need to view threads of interest.

Also, while I tend to read the forums for questions to Mistress, Master, Switch and sub (as well as Health & Safety, and General questions), I try only respond to topics that are within my own area (as I'm a Top), or on those threads that someone hasn't touched on how I also feel on the topic.

I also tend to skip, or quickly scan those redundant posters, and long winded posts (I'd rather see the movie <eg>). In the short time that I've been onboard, I've found that I look and enjoy certain members' responses, and totally skip others.

I do have a lot of free time, during the day, so I'm able to get online a couple times, and reading takes only a few minutes (unless there's a really hot topic).

Oh...and while I"m thinking of it, does anyone know of a way (if there is one) to block certain posters? Is there a way to block their posts from even showing up in your Forums? (what a nice feature that would be, if available)

While logged in, try clicking "block" under one of their posts and find out what happens...

Long-standing experience with public forums and lines of communication have proven that blocking is useless for me. It ends up a greater annoyance to only see half the conversation in a thread of interest. :P

The only thing I can suggest is start being more picky about what you want to read. Certain poster's I don't read what they have to say. While other posters I want to know every word they have to say.
Certain subject lines of posts just don't interest me at all. While certain boards don't either.
Use the amount of time you have wisely and spend it on the people and boards that really count to you.

As some have recently admitted here, many aren't really giving you solid advice they are here to play period. So, pick and choose wisely.

I know it isn't much help but it is the way I do things. I do log in several times a day but I still do not have the required amount of time to read it all.

Ok, I'm trying out a couple of new ways of viewing posts -- thanks for all the input everyone! :)

I do have one more question though -- I see there is a way you can click on an icon and be brought to the "latest post" in a topic, but is there a way to do this and be brought to the "first new post"?

Thanks!

Go to the "my profile" section within the boards. Scroll down past your info. You can change the way you see the boards.
New posts have always been on top for me....I don't think I've ever changed anything.
Yet, we all seem to have different issues.

Ok, I answered part of my own question here -- in "My Forums" I did find the little "go to first new post" icon. The problem I have now is that regardless of thread, whenever I click on it it brings up this message: "This message has been deleted or moved, and therefore not available. go back?"

Anyone got any ideas on this one? Thanks so much!

The feeling rather stupid, Ojedieu
