The first man to summit Mount Everest, Sir Edmund Hillary, has died. He was 88.

He has been a hero of mine since I was a kid. I hope he finds a huge mountain to climb in the beyond.

isn't it amazing how the truly great people in life seem to have the most humility and give so much back to the world?  the man did something incredible, considering the lack of equipment in that day, and then spent his life giving back to the people of the area he cared about so much.  he didn't stand there beating his chest telling the world how great he was like some of our "hero" types do these days.  he will be missed.

Just to say that either 1988 or 98 he admitted that he was NOT the first to reach the summit, his porter Sherpa Tensing was.

Well I am speaking from memory. I have checked several websites and they are either non committal as to who was first on the summit or say Hillary was.

popeye1250 -> RE: Sir Edmund Hillary dies (1/11/2008 8:19:40 AM)

Seeks, non committal?
Do you mean that for all these decades we were honouring the wrong guy?

seeksfemslave -> RE: Sir Edmund Hillary dies (1/11/2008 8:28:33 AM)

Well the last section was a team effort so I suppose we will never know for sure.
It certainly wouldnt surprise me one little bit.

angelikaJ -> RE: Sir Edmund Hillary dies (1/11/2008 8:33:59 AM)

in a team effort does it really matter...

they were the first team

And to think that I don't even like being on the top step of a ladder.
Kudos to his accomplishment.  That man must have had a huge set of balls.

All the more remarkable that he managed to climb Everest then !

I've climbed smaller mountains like a few of the rockys in Idaho and they are scary shit, so yeah I agree with you.

Or fallen off a skyscraper landed on a sunblind bounced back up and saved yourself by grabbing hold of some one's trousers.
Harold...his name just escapes me

"...At first, when he came down from the summit in May of 1953, many Nepalese didn't embrace Hillary, the outsider who had breached their peak. Hillary made sure to say that Norgay had reached the top a few steps before him. Just before he died in 1986, Norgay finally wrote the truth, that Hillary had in fact been first, and Hillary substantiated that.

But, he was quick to tell me, "Believe me, to mountaineers, who's first is not important. We're a team." ..."
