I have a ton of permanent piercings, but at an event last night, I did play piercing for the first time ever.  The 'demo top is a very experienced professional piercer.  Using needles with feathers glued on top, he gave me wings from peacock feathers and an assortment of accents.  I was in heaven.  Not only did the sensation sending me flying, but there is also a special energy in being someone else's canvas.  He used 44 needles at 25 gauge.  There was never a time where it 'hurt' except when he had to redirect the exit point for the needle.  We took pictures.  I walked around with the needles in for maybe 15 minutes, not counting the time it took to insert.  My endorphins were pumping and all was good.  I went to bed blabbing to my Dominant about how awesome the experience was and how we need to poke me more often.

However, I woke up this morning and it feels like I've pulled my back.  The actual marks from the needle are not what's bothering me, rather it's something muscular.  I was very comfortable and thought I was relaxed throughout the process.  But it feels similar to when you've pushed yourself just a little too far working out.

With that background information:

When the lovely endorphins have left your body, can they leave your muscles sore?

Do you think I tensed up without realizing it for the duration of the session and that's what has caused the soreness?  And if you think that's what happened, how do you relax and not tense up?

I guess I was not expecting a lot of pain after the fact and I was severely wrong.

Your body still reacted to the needles as "damage" that's why you get the endorphins.  You also get all sorts of chemicals to help protect and heal the area which can cause soreness.

As well, the extra weight and careful movements you needed to account for while the "wings" were on may have been more than enough to over push those particular muscles you don't notice very much.

That's kind of what I figured.

What's odd to me is that the area where there was the most needles is the area where my muscles hurt the most.

It's hard to answer definitively without seeing the site. It may be related to the depth he laid the needles in or possible infection starting. It could also be the normal soreness that is to be expected to come from such play. You should keep checking for signs of infection such as redness or red streaking. Some redness is normal at the sites but should not extend beyond it. Monitor your temperature.

The photographer will probably send me pictures when he gets around to it.  If it's approved, I'll put a shot of it on my profile, because it was sooooo pretty.

Thank you for the health advice. [:)]  I will keep a check on that.  I just wanted to make sure it was normal because I don't hear people mention muscle soreness with play like that.

i'm a fan of needles, and i, too, would love to see a pic of your wings!  sounds gorgeous!  [:D]

also, i had a needle scene recently, with 49  22 gauge needles inserted into the flesh on my back, and i WAS sore the next day - and for a few more days after that!  Not horribly sore, but i definitely felt it for a few days.

i would suggest having someone keep an eye on your back for any signs of infection (very unlikely if safety precautions were followed), and if it continues to be sore after a week - see a doctor. *

*DISCLOSURE:  this is just a suggestion!!  i am NOT a medical practitioner!*

Suggestions...

Vitamin E... good for stimulating skin growth.

Put antibiotic ointment on the piercing sites just as you would with a permanent piercing.

When the skin is damaged by a puncture, you can get inflammation of the site and the underlying muscle as it heals.  Increased blood flow causing swelling while the damage is repaired.  That may be part of your discomfort.  Taking an anti-inflammatory can help.  If it gets very uncomfortable, put ice on it to reduce the swelling.

A good way to apply ice, for injuries or just for play, is to freeze water in a styrofoam cup.  Then, you peel down the cup to expose the ice.  Give an insulated handle for application of the ice.  (is this a Helois Hint for doms?)

Just brainstorming on the subject,
Stefan

given the details that you expressed here, i would be inclined to think that the soreness might be due to the weight of the feathers - though slight, they were on a very small point...if there is no redness or warmth anywhere near the insertion or exit site then don't worry about it, if their is either, it could be an indication of infection...if signs of infection last more than a day or so, suck it up and get your ass to a doctor...you don't have to tell them any more circumstances other than what happened....you could have had a reaction to any number of things including the feathers and/or the glue...

good luck
chelle
