MONDAY, Jan. 14 (HealthDay News)-- The long-awaited results of a trial of Zetia, a cholesterol-lowering drug prescribed to about a million Americans, shows the drug confers no medical benefit to users. In fact, the pace at which artery-clogging plaques formed within vessels almost doubled in patients taking Zetia (ezetimibe) along with another cholesterol-lowering drug, Zocor (simvastatin), compared to those taking Zocor alone, the study found. The two medications -- ezetimibe plus simvastatin -- are also marketed in one prescription pill, called Vytorin. About 60 percent of U.S. patients who are taking Zetia now receive the drug as part of Vytorin. But the new two-year trial of 720 patients sheds doubt on whether it makes any sense for people battling cholesterol to take Vytorin versus Zocor alone, experts said. The study was funded by the two companies that make Zetia, Merck and Schering-Plough. "This wraps it up," said Dr. Steven E. Nissen, chairman of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic. "That's all there is. Level, Thank you for that information...and the link! In that I finally just tossed my Vytorin (the third cholesterol-reducer I've been on)...I no longer am getting horrible leg and foot cramps! I like the idea of looking at one's cholesterol ratio...before deciding on meds. Mine has never been as high as 4.0...so I wonder too, if I wasn't put on the stuff too early, in the first place! Sheeshhhhhhhhhhhhhh And...I'm now down 12 pounds/two weeks!!! Ya know, I bet I'm 'over' the need for meds real soon, anyway! ...including the BP ones! Yippieeeeeeeeeeeeeee I feel so much better! Thanks again (I printed the info and left it on my boss's desk...he's the Doc). [:D] Beverly

My mom cannot take statins, so she was on Zetia, she is so angry that she has been taking this drug for a year and it is absolutely useless. She is going holistic now.

I'm angry too, julia; angry I ever put that garbage in my body. I'm trying to get all the info and links for a thread on cholesterol, I hope you all keep an eye out for it.

I wonder if there will be a class-action suit: not just for the likely liver damage, but especially for pain & suffering! I cannot begin to tell you what it is like to wake up in the middle of the night with a claw-foot I had to get out of bed and walk on to make it....un cramp. Half the time I'd get there, go back to bed...only to have it immediately cramp right back up. Lordy...!!! I've found some De-Tox herbal tea...I'm gonna drink plenty of it, too! B

Zetia and Vytorin useless? Damn, that's some expensive shit. Does anybody get a refund? Not to mention, does anybody get a refund for the other drugs patients had to buy due to the side effects of Zetia and Vytorin. Nuts and Bolts, we've been SCREWED!
