Society for Creative Anachronism, most likely.    But it depends on what the context is.

Society for creative anachoronism-or "some cretinous assholes" depending on the attitudes of your local group.

Youv'e got it all wrong... The correct way to phrase it is
Dear Gods please grant me wisdom into the very privilaged secrets of your most divine institution, the SCA? Unworthy though I am, I beg this of you...

Hmmm, having been hit with a 40 inch rattan weapon, I would in no way consider them a "toy".

If you have actually been hit with a real rattan weapon, then you have been playing with the Dog Brothers, not the SCA.

Seriously, compared to a metal sword (or even a bokken), the SCA weapons are not even close to real, nor were they ever meant to be. They are made out of rattan and restricted in their design and usage, for the sake of safety - not realism.

That isn't an aspersion, just a categorization of the implements the SCA plays with.

Its not really all that hard to understand the connections between the SCA and BDSM. People dress in funny costumes, gather in large groups, enjoy fine booze and cheap women (fine women and cheap booze??), and beat on each other for hours.

Not sure how to define it but I can describe it-Fight all day, drink dance and wench all night. Find your tent the next morning. Eat 4 asprins and 2 doughnuts and do it all over again. Pretend your a Viking. Gotta love it.                -Baroney of Grey Niche, Kingdom of Gleann Abhann (Memphis)

That is I think where SCA differs from what most of us do in the UK, Here, we use replica steel weaponry, my own sword is 27 inch long by 2 inch wide and made out of tempered and case hardened steel with a eigth inch 'edge'.Basically an Iron Age hacking sword, but mine has a point too, it being what is considered a 'safe' half inch round.

Here, we can if offered a weapon or shield to hit, can give it full welly and use the sword. If a strike to a person, then we learn to as actors, 'pull' blows, a hit that looks forceful, but is'nt. Even with all the safety rules, there are injuries, I myself have broken knuckles and fingers by being hit, that was before I went for a maille encrusted welders glove, not quite authentic, but definately safer!

Fighting in this manner as doing battle re-enactment, we get a full realisation of what it was to wield weapons without the killing, swords, spears and shields are bloody heavy and we can see why fights, battles etc were short events, even given our ancestors were a lot stronger than our present race.

Some people play squash to vent feelings, I can tell you, a cold winter's morning dressed in archaic attire with a length of cold steel clutched in your mit, you soon warm up and the after result, is a wonderful feeling of release. Thinking of the past weeks difficulties, they all dissolve in hitting something, a something which has the ability to hit back and there making you think how to better the opponent.

There are some groups in the US who play that way, Adrian Empire being one, can't remember the others offhand.

I believe Markland was another US group that uses "live steel".   Or at least they were, many years ago when I was involved in SCA.

The odd thing is , or perhaps not so odd really, I have encountered a very lot of people who are into battle re-enactment and also kinky. The first time I encountered my ex, she was playing the part of a Roman slave, complete with chains, apparently sold for an amphora of wine, fair deal I suppose.
