I used to think that it was the Society for Creative Anachronism...
and then I saw all the tent-hopping, drunken lusty wenches and wankers running around like dogs panting in the heat.

So now I just lovingly refer to it as the Society for Consenting Adults.

I was in the SCA once... it's great if you are into politics and drama. But, they do use real swords. The folks who use the toy "boffer" swords is the IFGS (International Fantasy Gaming Society) They basically play D&D full scale, wearing costumes, and using theatrical effects. Fun, but I was never one for sword and socery. (Just another reason I think Gor is a waste of time.)

That is actually Amptgard.  They use foam weapons and are merely fantasy based.

Can you name any group of 30,000 or more people that isn't all about politics and drama?

And I've been involved with the SCA since 1972 and can't recall anyone authorized to fight with real swords.  Wooden replicas and blunted rapiers is the standard.

Every time I go to watch the SCA it seems to be about some big bruzer with a huge wooden mallet (battle axe) against some poor little dude with a wooden stick (sword) getting his bones broken.

I don't belong to SCA.   No way am I gonna compete against that dude with the mallet.   And they wonder why they lose more members than they gain.  

Personally I fight live steel but am picky about whom I will fight with.   But we all have our preferences.

I left when they started hitting so damned hard in an tir that they started denting twelve gage steel helmet skulls routinely. (That's almost an eight inch thick folks)

I decided it was a good time to quit, before some white belt jerk with an attitude problem killed someone for REAL. I don't want to be there when it finally happens.

Daddy and I got married at an SCA war. The day oif our wedding there was a ravine battle he participated in. He got hit with a glaive to the back of his head, kinda slightly between the back and above the left ear. Daddy's persona is Japanese, and  the way his helm is designed, the exact spot where the glaive landed is actually made of three overlapping layers of steel, riveted together. Daddys helm now sports a nice dented in area right there, and he was knocked unconcious and suffered a cuncussion severe enough it warrented the call of paramedics. For some strange reason the marshalls decided the person who hit him did NOT use excessive force. I can guarentee, that if Daddy was still fighting in European armor, and wearing a helmet only made of one layer of steel instead of three....the injury would have been MUCH more severe and our wedding may not have happened.

(on the EMT paperwork, under "casue of injury"...the EMT wrote "trying to get out of marriage")

Head shots, they are to be avoided at all costs, but they happen. One of my ex's family now has a hairline crack in her skull after failing to block a blow from her brother whilst practicing with mild steel swords,these having a completely dull edge and being about 5 mm thick.My replica which I largely made myself habitually cut the mild steel swords in two. Hardened EN 45 spring steel, three eight inch thick of it is quite formiddable.It now lies unhilted, as I am sort of in the process of creating the correct Romano British arrangement as opposed to the celt type it had from an earlier period.

When I started live steel battles, none of our lot had helmets, we were more or less the paupers of the re-enactment world, running about barefoot and sometimes barely clothed covered in 'Snazoo' blue theatre paint and lime washed like hair stuck up in spikes, wearing bronze torcs and armlets.

To the fellow from Europe-There are a LOT of groups out there learning history by living it (even if just for a weekend) I have played with the live steel boys and the boffer wepon boys and by far I prefer the SCA. When I have to break my wrist on a blow it just dosen't feel the same and I think teaches bad habits. Our wepons my be ratan but I have a *bunch* of dents in my helm to prove we aint just running a bunch of preset moves. It's as real as I ever want to get out there. I've been playing the game for 12 years now and I have to say its the most educational and enjoyable thing I have ever been involved in. Also I have met the best, most interesting most noble and decent folks there. I also met my sub and probably future wife because of the SCA (but I'll get over that some day). I can't imagine another hobby where I would be willing to let folks put bruises on top of the bruises from last week, I prefer to give bruises than get them. Overall it may sound corny but the SCA is without a doubt the most enjoyable thing I have done in my life. Have a good day.
