The National ID card has been coming for a long time, because, frankly, the USA is one of the few countries that doesn't have one. When I was living in Asia, I had to have an Alien ID card on my person at all times. Any cop or train conductor or gov't official had the right to demand it from me at any time to prove who I said I was. And it happened more than once. A symbol of totalitarianism? Probably. Officious? You bet! Necessary? Who can say? But in the age of computer printers, scanners, fingerprint readers, cell phones, interceptors, radar scramblers, and who knows what else, how can we really prove we are who we say we are? I don't want to carry an ID card in my own country, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happens in the next five years.
