When I went to bed last night- I wonderred if I should have startede this thread. I see some cool replies- so Im glad. I was born in Pennsylvania. My parents met on a beach when Dad was in the Navy- they married and made their life in Chicago. We'ld visit my grandparents in PA every Easter- and some summers. So PA was my 2nd home- that place far away that was always special. My gandmother always loved everyone unconditionally. She is an inspiration. I am 44. Growing up in Chicagoland- there is a identity -insecurity. We were second city. Anything New York did- we challenged to do it bigger and better. Many times we succeeded. Then as I came of age- LA surpassed Chicago in population and statistically became second city.... but not really. [some say LA is bigger then New York if you count the sprawal] From as a child- the mentality was there are 2 types of people in the world- those from Chicago- and those who are not. Indeed we had many uniquely Chicago traditions and inventions. The acrchitecture is appealing- once said the most American city- as the coasts are influenced by abroad. When I reached 20, I went into the inner city and bought a 3 unit. I thought we could all get along. Boy was I wrong. The gangs and the guys in the ties ran me out- 1st from my property; then from the metro. September 14, 1988 I moved in a $100 junker jalopy- to Pennsylvania- where my mom was. [after dad passed she moved back home-ish] You see- I was conditioned to think one must be from a glitzy metro to have a meaningful or happy life. I actually believed this. I was SO wrong.
