This is about a quarter of the figure given in a disputed Lancet article, but nearly three times higher than that of the Iraq Body Count campaigning group.

The result is based on interviews with over 9,000 families across Iraq carried out by the health ministry for the WHO.
The survey says more than half of all violent deaths were in Baghdad.

The World Health Organization study looks only at the period from March 2003 until June 2006.

OK, so if the 600,000 figure was way off...how do I know this one isnt way off?

Since around 2 million Iraqis have fled the country due to the violence, I don't see how a poll of 9,000 families can be accurate.

One figure that was on the BBC news the other day was that two thirds of Iraqi medical staff have left the country, leaving the health service there in crisis and that infant mortality has gone up since the invasion and is worse now than under the Saddam regime.

You know, what always boggles my mind is that no one ever mentions the two million or so Iraqi civilians who have fled the country because they can't live there anymore. They're not counted in the casualty lists because they're still alive; but they have lost their country anyway--and they represent the cream of the crop: doctors, lawyers, priests, engineers, scientists, the professionals who used their money and connections to flee because their country was unliveable.

If you want the real story of Iraq, read "Baghdad Burning". It's a blog run by a woman who lived through the invasion and the civil war that erupted afterward. She and her family are part of that flood of emigrants. They're now living in Syria!

And if Iraqi civilians seek refuge in the land of the free, guess what generally happens to them?

The lack of curiosity,is telling...

Figuring out who`s dead and so on,is something the US doesn`t even attempt to do.The WHO ,and UN and other outfits are doing the best they can, with what they have.At least there is someone who gives a shit.

In a catastrophe as huge as this, estimating the count, comes in the form of low numbers and and sets of higher numbers. The truth is is somewhere in between. The integrity of the people doing the study also counts. The 600.000 number put forth in the  "Lancet" (a British medical journal)is just one set,the World Health Organization`s numbers, another, etc.

With all that said,it`s amazing that the Iraqis haven`t tossed us out.Imagine how we would feel,if some country invaded us,in order to "spread freedom",and killed 150,000 Americans ,attempting it? And that`s the low number....
