Somebody in san Antonio has gone totally bat shit insane.

I'm not sure it would be possible to code a filter to detect infringing material in IP pckets without having to become essentially a giant man in the midle attacker. Which would degrade network performance to the point of unusability and is evadable by good double key encryption. ATT would have to forward encrypted packets to the destination IP without changes or all of the security around which ecommerce is built would come crashing down so this seems to be an insurmountable obstacle even if the performance and detection issues could be worked out.

The only way this makes sense is if it is the brainchild of a copyright lawyer, or that of a CEO who grew up in the 1950's and has no idea what "bandwidth" really is. For a communications company to start examining content shipped on the wires--acting as its own censor--is flat-out insane!

The day they start doing this is the day the AT&T stock starts heading for the cellar.

Ah, it's not so bad.  Once they have this system in place, they can start preventing other Internet crimes.. illegal types of porn, for example.  Once we're comfy with that, we can root out some of the lurking pedophiles in underaged chat sites.  Then we can start looking into drug crimes and get that out of the way.  Then we can look for those instances in which people confess to crimes to a friend via email or messenger.

Ah!  Everything's working nicely.  But I think sadomasochistic porn's pretty twisted.  Let's outlaw it now, since we're able to enforce it.  You know.. I think someone's criticizing my political party in a manner that resembles a threat to the peace.. let's throw them in jail for a while.

---

If ATT takes to this, I hope they go down in flames.  The Internet has a common law: "Don't taddle."  It allows for so much freedom that's provided what's been a boon to so many.  However, once religious juggarnaughts and special interests get a hold of such a power, it could well be damning to any sort of personal freedom.

In the past, liberty has been perserved through the lack of ability to enforce restrictions on it.  Some freedoms would've had to have been blantantly attacked to fall.  With so much power, though, it would easily be possible to slowly introduce new restrictions.

I'm with the article's author.

"We've got this...what is it...Buffcoat and Beaver or Beaver and something else. I haven't seen it, I don't watch it, but whatever it is, it was at 7, Buffcoat, and they put it on now at 10:30"- Fritz Hollings

A prime example of those who have no idea what's going on making laws about something they don't know shit about!!

Welcome to the Matrix, Brothers and Sisters, now if you will be so kind as to keep your mouth's shut the death camp guards will tattoo your numbers onto your arm.

Holy bandwith Batman.

See this is why you do not let execs make big descions with out talking to the lil guys...

That is just bloody stupid. AT&T was one of the biggest stool pigons when the US govt was spying on the American population through phone and internet conversations. They made no protest. Hell now they want to do it on thier own. I would love to do a side by side comparison of thier supporters and who is on AT&T's board... I bet ya some would line up.
