Definitely can read novels without sleeping which is why I usually have non-fiction to read if I want to go to sleep rapidly. Just try reading Over the Edge of the World: Magellan's Terrifying Circumnavigation of the World when you are tired.

TPBM had more than one book in progress at a time.
