And also it's an outrage especially when they don't intend to tag it so you won't know whether you are buying cloned animal products or the real thing.Crazy utterly crazy, also cloned animals are at a higher risk of infection,so the meat won't be so pure.Thankgod im a veggie lol.But seriously now what does everyonelse think about this?

The thought of eating a cloned animal is absolutely creepy to me.   Ugh!

i read the story this morning, ill look for it...

cloning endangered species? yes please do, and hurry!
how come this has never been mentioned???
cloning food animals? way too expensive, 10,000-20,000 each.
they will be using the offspring of the cloned animals if they decide to go ahead with it.
whatever, im against it for so many reasons, most of which i cant even articulate!
its just that feeling inside, its so wrong. i wouldnt want to eat the original clones or the offspring,
not without a hell of alot more research and study.

my family has decided to go meatless if they really do go thru with it.
now, let me go find that link...

To be honest, the idea of cloning an entire animal simply for it's products is actually quite inefficient.  The real breakthrough, coming soon, will be when they can clone certain pieces and mass replicate.  So instead of cloning a prize winning steer, feeding, sheltering, insecticides, vaccination etc etc for years until slaughter, you simply clone the muscle, fat, etc, and grow it in large slabs in factories.  Or you could even do it in aesthetically appealing shapes.  For muscle you may have to stimulate it to replicate movement and working of tissue so that texture is approximate.  You could do the same for leather - just grow sheets of skin that isn't actually attached to anything and harvest, tan, etc.

Not limited to just this type of consumables.  The same will be done for human organs.  Completley inefficient to clone a whole human for spare parts (like "The Island").  They would take a sample, create the necessary stem cells, grow in in a vat on a type of lattice, and in a week you would have a custom grown replacement heart that is genetically identical to your own.

To be honest, cloning I see as a 'fad'.  The real step is to grow tissues and organs separately from a living organism.

here it is. i hope you didnt actually have beef for dinner before you read this,
its pretty disturbing.
i truely hope if this goes thru that they decide to label one or the other,
shouldnt we get the option to choose????

I think that most people have absolutely no clue what cloning is or how it works, and your imaginations are much creepier and more science-fiction/horror movie flavored than the reality.

You do realize that the vast majority of meat and dairy animals are bred using artificial methods and have been for decades.  Do you find that creepy?

BitchGoddessD -> RE: The sale of cloned animal products is so wrong as it's unethical and also immoral. (1/18/2008 7:10:50 PM)

For what it's worth.  If you are concerned, find the closest Whole Foods (large organic food store.)  They have stated publically that they will only sell meat from suppliers that they have an agreement with for organic and non-cloned animal products.  No I don't have a source but I'm sure its out there.  It was discussed on local tv news.

DesFIP -> RE: The sale of cloned animal products is so wrong as it's unethical and also immoral. (1/18/2008 7:11:45 PM)

At a cost of over $10,000 a cloned animal, they're being used for studs, not for food.

If it were cheaper, I would investigate cloning the show horse. He's an amazing animal but a gelding. And his sire's dead so I couldn't get a full brother.

Think of cloning the great racehorses of yesteryear, Man O' War against Secretariat against Seattle Slew. Now that would be a Derby!

Cloning animals is wrong. unethical, and immoral? How so? Judge not unless ye be judged.

I say clone away as it's the way to feed us in the future when we begin advanced space travel, live in space stations, and populate other planets.

I can't wait to see if and when anyone can taste the difference.

As for todays time, having some whale meat/materials back in the US would be nice. So let's get cloning damn it.

I think if it would be to feed those that go hungry, then it would be a godsend.  If it made mass producing of food products cheaper so those that are starving all over the world - stop starving..........then go for it.

Stop World Hunger.  Instead of sending my 19 cents a day - send a cloned animal!  Seriously though, if it were to stop hunger in places like Africa and India and even the homeless in America.......

sadly, I doubt it will be.  It will just go to help feed the spoiled lazy people of america - )

I fully agree... There was an Episode of Penn and Teller's Bullshit where they discussed genetically altered veggies, (I think it was season 2) As far as I can see, why the hell shouldnt we be finding more ways to cheaply create food, that way everyone can eat at least 3 times a day :). Personally as long as they observe standard safety procedures I dont care whether the chicken I ate came from a farm or a lab... But thats just me, mor interested in the effects then the as yet unclear moral issues... That doesnt mean I want to see HUman species cloning, that just seems like it would end badly, but cheaper beef? Sounds yummy!

So the FDA says its safe? Where is the disgusting part? You ever see a cow get inseminated? thats pretty disgusting, scraping an ear? not so much.

I doubt there would be any perceivable difference in a natural steak and a cloned steak. In all probability since both are meat made up of the same basic elements and having the same biological structure I doubt that after cooking there would be any health differences.

Personally I want to see more cloning. Sooner or later I am going to need some replacement parts and I'd much rather they were grown in some vat as clones of my original parts than ripped out of a living person who may or may not be a perfect match. Given the options growing a kidney from my own cells seems a whole lot less barbaric than cutting one out of a functional living person. Bring on the clones! Let's get the technique perfected.

Apologize for the derailment, but each time I see this quote misused, my OCD kicks in. "Judge not, lest ye be judged my thine own measure'" refers to hypocricy. Don't judge unless you accept those same standards of judgement to be applied back to you. I now return you to your regular broadcast.

I doubt this will take off anytime soon.  Cattle, chickens, hogs, etc breed on their own free of  the expense of cloning.   My guess would be that if this is pushed it will be to benefit the large corporations who stand to make money on it.  Uh...maybe I had better retract my first statement.  If these corporations will make money they will do it at our expense over letting animals reproduce on their own.

Dang those critters for running around copulating for free and making baby animals.  How dare they?

DesFIP -> RE: The sale of cloned animal products is so wrong as it's unethical and also immoral. (1/19/2008 11:11:28 AM)

Many cattlemen use artificial insemination. It's more common than not in the horse world barring thoroughbred racing. Very common on dairy farms as dairy bulls are extremely dangerous animals to have around. Buying 50 straws of semen from a prize winning bull is a great deal faster and safer than letting a dairy bull loose on your herd of top milk producers.

sharainks -> RE: The sale of cloned animal products is so wrong as it's unethical and also immoral. (1/19/2008 12:35:55 PM)

Egads, here in KS we mostly seem to do it the old fashioned way.  Not to say that some who have "high end" livestock don't use artificial insemination but there is plenty of open land here so the easiest way is to put male and female together and let nature work.

There isn't a huge amount of dairy cattle here either so that might make a difference.  Most cattle here go to beef steak etc.
