Neil Young??? Let me put it this way, When burned out dope heads like "Crosby, Stills and Nash" Kick your ass to the curb I think that says alot.

Lets just see, I think Neil Young had what one hit? "This Note's for You" which is about as commercially pop as you can get!

He actually had quite a few hits.

And not just on a bong, either.

Well, I don't have any personal ally to Neil Young, and I don't really care if other people like him or not, but you should get your facts straight.

He has had 7 albums that made it into the top 10 and one #1 hit (Heart of Gold).

30 albums were in the top 100, as were 12 singles.  Oddly enough, Rockin in the Free World, while you may have liked it, did not reach top 100 status, either in the US or the UK.

Young also created the annual Bridge School Benefit, which supports the Bridge School - a school for children with severe speech and physical impairments.

A friend of mine I used to have at work, years ago, went Harley riding with him (their wives were childhood friends) and said they came upon some young guys who had wiped out around a corner on Skyline Blvd (California Bay Area Hills) and Neil stopped and helped the guy up, making sure he was OK and offering to get him some help.

Not bad credentials for a dope head.

I think you got that backwards. Skynard Sucks.

I mean, hell, making an entire career out of parading the rotted carcass of Freebird around for the encore... That's a real accomplishment.

Inever said they were the greatest band ever.  But they are a hell of a lot better than Neil Young.  I'm not a big Freebird fan.  I think 'Tuesday's Gone' is their best song.  Anyway, I stand by my words.  Neil Young sucks.

Pollstar is only relevant to currently touring bands, and since the core players of Skynrd are dead, it is hardly an apt comparison.  I mean Hanah Montana is higher ranked than Young, according to pollstar.  But is Pop appeall really the measure of artistic greatness?  I think not.

Neil Young is one of my favorite guitar heros of all time, his work is very important to me.  He (along with Dylan) is a great inspiration to millions of guitarists who can't really sing but want to anyway.

Neil Young is super cool. He has a strange sound to him that I think is great. I like his song writing. He has some great songs too. I find him way more talented than any of the Crosby, Stills and Nash gang. In fact, I think they didnt come alive until he showed up, even though they can harmonize well.

My sister went to see him this past year, quite recently, maybe November. She paid a heap of money, and the tickets were so hard to come by. She was somewhat worried he would be some old man she didnt think was Neil Young anymore, and it was true like that a bit, she said. She also said she LOVED the concert. It was at Massey Hall which is a smallish venue in Toronto and she said it was perfect.

Pollstar is only relevant to currently touring bands,

That's what ROCK AND ROLL *IS*. Everything else is just listening to an album.

And Skynyrd IS currently touring... http://www.lynyrdskynyrd.com/tour.php

It's just that they suck so bad now, no-one is booking them except the "Casino 'n' Corndog Circuit". ( Which isn't a *bad* thing, as long as you're suitably humble about being on your way back down to the minors... Which I understand they aren't, which explains the light bookings... )

And it's not like the Genre is dead, either. The Allman Brothers Band lead in 2004 concert grosses for their stand at the Beacon Theater ( 3000 seats or thereabouts... ) $1,878,822. -- March 18-20, 22-23, 25-28. 2004.

Well I simply disagree and do not think you have the right to define what rock and roll is.  Lots of people do not get to see concerts.  But you can have that opinion.  I didn't say the Genre of Southern Rock was dead, I stated the fact that the Core members of the Specific Band Skynrd, are.  So yeah they are a laugh on the Corndog circut.  I would imagine "Neil Young" tours by his drummer, 15 years after Neil dies would also be rather lame.

So farg, using your Data and Metrics, Pollstar, you agree that Hanah Montana rocks harder then Neil Young?  I simply must disagree

I am not knocking Young, I love his work, but a lot of it is absolute crap.  His recent stuff is horrible.  He goes big and bold--sometimes makes diamonds-- sometimes off the wall crap.  But Skynrd was an incredibly important band.  And you are right Southern Rock is not dead as a genere, it is still kicking and making a comeback.  Skynrd was more important to the SR mode, than Young was to the hippy thing.  Young just wandered down from Canada and joined in with the hippies.  Skynrd was a pioneer in the development of Southern Rock.  Nothing of Young's is as iconic as Freebird.

But this is an argument as senseless as whether Blue is better than Green.

To me, Rock and Roll includes sitting in the near dark with headphones and a waterpipe, really intently feeling, the music.
Or driving in a car with friends with very loud music going.  As well as going to shows.

Something we can agree on....I have always admired those that write their own music. Neil Young has always had something relevant to say through his music.

As far as relevance Neil Young was a driving force for change. Lynard Skynard? I still enjoy a few of their songs. Very few...Simple Man still holds the test of time. Much of their music I could go a lifetime without ever having to hear it again...."Gimme Three Steps"....Yawn...."I Know a Little"...."Saturday Night Special".."Call Me the Breeze"...Music is subjective...To each their own....If these were the pioneers and the voice of Southern Rock then they really never had much to say. Occasionaly it might be fun to drink some whiskey and beer and mindlessly listen to their tunes. Which made them somewhat effective because that is all the South as well as their fans ever demanded or were able to comprehend.

I think it is rather obvious when looking at CSN&Y who was the driving force behind their creativity.

Like many musical artists it seems that his best work is well behind him now. Such is life.

But then again I am a product of this nation so expectations should not be set to high.

I'm just one more kid that'll never get to go to school
never get to fall in love, never get to be cool.
