Yeah, although I'm going to have a hard time looking at the guy from "Shaun of the Dead" as Scotty. It's going to be difficult to keep from saying "You've got red on you." in the theatre...

This is the first Trek movie I have an interest in seeing since the first one.

Thanks for the head up, Celeste. [:D]

They are going to milk that franchise for every penny they can.  I knew we hadn't heard the last of Star Trek.

Just last week a Star Trek Convention has opened at the Queen Mary in Long Beach California and will tour the US all year.  Many Trekkers like myself are looking at all this and are saying "Paramount is trying to convince the under 40 group that Star Trek is really cool"

Phin -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/21/2008 9:18:42 PM)

this movie reminds me of something...

oh, yeah.... [sm=horse.gif]

they are doing it with 2 of my favorite games of all time too

Final Fantasy
Soul Blade aka SoulEdge, but the sequals are Soul Caliber. the 5th istallation will have Yoda and Darth Vader.

Well, it is cool. Maybe once they get the franchise away from Berman, we can see something a little closer to the original conception of what Trek was supposed to be in the first place: Capt. Horatio Hornblower in space.

Instead, we had the "Motion Picture" that tried to make it into 2001, all effects and no human story...

The next two films, Wrath of Khan and Search for Spock, actually got it right, in my opinion. The boxoffice seems to back me up on that. They were the two most successful films of the series so far.

The others all seemed flawed in various ways... the whales movie was pretty contrived, the one directed by Shatner was... well, awful, and "Generations" got a little over the top with the baton transfer. It wasn't until "First Contact" that they really hit the note again, stressing the action and character development.

The other two TNG films just didn't really capture the imagination...

Let's hope Abrhams does something really wonderful with the original characters. With luck, he might actually be following Vonda McIntyre's "Enterprise" in tone and story. (The Trek novel that doubles as a doorstop!)

Star Trek is for children. Babylon 5 is for adults.

LOL!

Babble 5 is for chumps who believe the BS Straczynski feeds them.

I have mixed feelings about  a pre-quel to the OG cast and crew.....

bipolarber -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/22/2008 7:49:11 PM)

B5 was good, but it had problems. It was great that it had multiple races of aliens that were non-humanoid, and ships that actually obeyed Newton's laws of motion. But, it did get awfully soapy at times. And the story arc got so insular that if you didn't get into the show from the beginning, you got totally lost.

Trek had the same problems at times. As much as the Trek folk like to act like it's something brand new and shiny, this type of space opera has been around for close to 60 years... (longer if you count radio) It's closest relative is the old "Space Patrol" show.

If I had my druthers, "Farscape" and "Firefly" would still be on. Of course, the single best series I've ever seen never made it past the two hour pilot: "Plymouth."

PanthersMom -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/22/2008 8:27:42 PM)

i'll reserve judgement until after i see it.  there's possibilities for good or bad.  i'll probably end up going in with the attitude that i shouldn't expect  much based on past performances.  maybe i'll be pleasantly surprized.

It can't be worse than Enterprise.

Shawn1066 -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/22/2008 9:05:44 PM)

Voyage Home was the movie I felt was most like the rest of the original series.  Wrath of Khan, however, is my favorite.  I still get choked up at the end.

Straczynski was smart enough to walk away from Joe "Cheesy"'s Amazing Spider-man fiasco, and took his name off the books.

A parallel example:

When we saw Val Kilmer as Batman, we said the same thing..

Then there was George Clooney.

Joel Schumacher -- History's Greatest Monster.

DomKen -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/22/2008 10:54:15 PM)

After Keaton I sort of, only sort of, liked Kilmer as Batman.

My only real problem with Straczynski is the amazing number of flat out lies he's told over the years about the spiraling out of control B5 plot that his sycophants have swallowed hook, line and sinker. He always intended to change captains, He always meant to kill off Ivanova's girlfriend right after the lesbian plot got started, Even though the series finale was shown in season 4 and Straczynski said it was the end he always intended to have a fifth season etc. etc..

farglebargle -> RE: New Star Trek Movie Cast pics (1/23/2008 5:11:47 AM)

*spoiler alert*

1) Well, if he didn't change captains, how could Sinclair have left and become Valen?

2) Maybe. The Howard Stern Rule is: "Lesbians equals Ratings". I don't know why anyone would mess with that formula.

3) Season 4/5. When word came down that there wasn't a network anymore, and that there *wouldn't* be a season 5, they discarded all the "filler" episodes and condensed the Season 4 and Season 5 arcs to fit. THEN they got the money for a 5th season, and had to fill it out. *THAT* caused some plotting problems.
