I am writing this because I am feeling very confused. I am a masochist and have always needed pain, but the other night I looked in the mirror at some lovely welts and when I saw them I had a strong feeling of "complete-ness" as a human being, rather than just feeling submissive.

I've noticed lately that when I don't have marks on my body I feel restless and disconnected. And if I don't get pain for a while I get depressed. But when I have marks I feel whole again.

I just wondered if anyone else feels like that.

I've been getting more and more so that way, and I'm new to the S&M/corporal side of things. Also, I found I love blood on me, which surprised me to no end. I get antsy and anxious until we play that hard again.

I don't know. That's why I'm confused.
Is it a legitimate need?

Mmm I find it hard to answer..needs are needs .and change from person to person.
I myself..worry about such things..so I am not a good adviser..and have no experience. It sounds to me as an addiction..
Please wait on some other reactions.

you do not mention in your profile whether you are new or not... i only wonder about that, as when one first indulges in something they have long wanted but denied themselves there is a tendency to crave that specific thing constantly.  Some call if sub frenzy, though i dislike that term myself.  i myself LOVE bruises and marks, they way they feel physically and mentally can be a powerful thing.  However to become depressed or anxious because you do not have them on your body 24/7 is (in my opinion only) not entirely healthy.  Is it the marks you are craving, or what they represent to you?

Welts and bruises make me feel proud. I'm a good little soldier.
It also means I had a good time and took a trip to subspace.

Thank you for your thoughtful post. I am not new to this. I first discovered pain play about seven years ago and was worried about it becoming addictive back then, but discovered that over time I needed less pain to release endorphins, rather than more (like a drug). Once the pathways in my brain were set, they worked better each time I used them, and endorphin release became faster and easier. So I stopped being worried about it becoming an addiction and just enjoyed myself for many years.

But then the other night, I had such a strong reaction to looking at my welts in the mirror, and I realised these feelings had crept up on me. To answer your question, it is both the marks themselves, and what they represent that I crave, but there is some kind of visual trigger in seeing them on my body that seems to affect me the most.

Thank you  ~smile~   i had hoped you would not take my question as a insult or a flame, as it was not my intent.  It can be very difficult to answer something on the boards without knowing enough of the facts.

i do wish i had a better response to you.  When i have not played in a long time i know that i get that twitchy need release sort of sensation, however it does not lead to any feelings of depression... just hunger.  :)

Hopefully someone on here can give you some advice that will actually be helpful.

I wish I could remember the exact wording, but I've heard needs/wants/desires described a little bit like this:

An unfulfilled need is something that will cause you physical pain.
An unfulfilled want will cause you emotional pain.
A fulfilled desire will add energy to your life. (And if it goes unfulfilled, it doesn't cause any pain.)

Where does it fall for you?

I know that I miss them a lot.  They did fulfill something in me, they gave me a proud and accomplished feeling.  I don't know if I would consider them making me complete, but I do know that something deep down was quenched when I could see the aftermath of some torturious night at the hands of a sadistic dom.

It does cause me some pain to not have it now.  I am emotionally healthy, it's just something that I need as part of who I am.  It's not a pain I cannot live with, it's more like an itch I can't quite reach.  It's a bit of torture, a bit of pleasure, and a type of sadistic act on it's own.

So for now I will take my pleasure from the mental pain, until the physical comes to me again.

Bruises, welts, cuts?

Be still my beating heart. :-D

The aftermath, in my experience, is the single best part of masochism.  Looking at your bruises, or tiger stripes.  It's amazing.  I can just close my eyes and remember how erotic the whole amazing, stressful, pianful, and intense ordeal beforehand was.

compleatly understand what you mean by how you get depressed when you don't have bruising and how whole you feel when you do. i am very much the same way in that but i would not call it depression i would call it more of a longing.

it just doesn't feel right to me after a flogging if there aren't any bruises a day later(for me it's usually only 10 minutes before they start showing). i actually learned recently that my Mistress enjoys leaving bruises on me as well so guess could say it's a mutual thing here.

it is interesting.  i do so love the marks that Daddy leaves on me.  W/we are long distance so i dont get to see Him a lot.  although i suppose that is relative.  i do get to see Daddy about twice a month usually.  the marks Daddy leaves behind are little reminders (like i need them?) that i am His. completely, untterly, devoted to Him.  i was kind of disappointed when no reminders of our visit were left on my body one time.

so, i suppose,  the answer is yes they do mean something to me.  does it make me more complete?  mmmm, maybe what they mean to me is what makes me more complete than the marks themselves.

my relationship has just ended. But I my I did so love the bruises,as that was his way of marking me,usually through biting

and I loved the bruises on my wrists from handcuffs or wire

so my marks were an affirmation that he owned me and would do as he wanted

For me they are a wonderfully visual and sensual reminder of what caused them, often keeping me distracted and on the edge for a few days.

I agree.  It's very much like a snapshot of a great time.  Then they fade and I want another "picture."
