"It just says 'Choose Life,"' said Onge, who considers himself anti-abortion. "It doesn't say ban abortion. I thought it was proper and a very innocent thing, but there were a couple members of the committee who didn't see it that way." http://www.kctv5.com/news/15125693/detail.html Isn't 'Choose Life' sort of the standard catch-phrase for the anti-abortionists? This doesn't feel right to me.

The Alliance Defense Fund sued in June 2006 on behalf of Choose Life of Missouri and the group's president. The suit alleged lawmakers violated free speech, due process and equal protection rights by rejecting Choose Life's application for the specialty plate, while approving other proposals.

(...)

The lawsuit alleged the process was too vague because "there are no objective standards or written criteria to govern the Joint Committee's decision regarding whether an eligible organization's plate design is approved."

Judge Scott Wright agreed. In ruling that the Choose Life plates must be issued, he found that state law on the matter was "unconstitutionally vague and overbroad."

It's not really that different from the massive stickers people slap on the back of their cars, is it... except it's more of a shag to remove it.

Warning: macabre and cynical line to follow.

I wonder whether we'll have 'Choose death' number plates available for death penalty advocates in states that apply it?

Is one of the other plates approved 'Choose abortion'? [;)]

i guess "make the choice you feel is right for you" is too long to go on a license plate huh?

Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family.
Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars,
compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good
health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed
interest mortage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your
friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a
three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics.
Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning.
Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing
game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose
rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable
home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up
brats you spawned to replace yourself.

Choose your future.

Choose life..... But why would I want to do a thing like that?

I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got heroin?

Trainspotting is hilariously tragic. If there can be such a thing.

Stephann -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 2:34:26 PM)

John: It's camp!...  You know?  The ludicrously tragic? The tragically ludicrous?
Homer: Oh yeah. Like when a clown dies.

Interesting question... in response to our "In God We Trust" license plate, the state Secular Humanists society got a license plate approved that reads "In Reason We Trust"... i don't know if they'd have any luck gettting a "Choose Abortion" plate through, though... probably best they could do would be Planned Parenthood.

If i could get a "Choose Death" plate on the hearse, i would be SO stoked [:D]

CalifChick -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 4:39:44 PM)

How about "Choose Choice".

kittinSol -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 4:47:51 PM)

"Choose Choice" has a nice sound to it; I like the alliteration very much.

Do you think much legal battling would be necessary in order to have such a slogan on one's number plate?

CalifChick -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 4:49:54 PM)

I think it depends greatly on your state, and I'm thinking the answer would be yes.  I would offer to write it on my ass in the meantime, strictly as a promotional advertisement, but my ass is already written on from other activities.

I choose not to live in Missouri.

SimplySubmissive -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 4:56:21 PM)

Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi and South Carolina have passed laws that sanction the sale of "Choose Life" license plates.

This isn't really a new thing.

GreedyTop -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 5:16:24 PM)

Florida is already selling the choose life plates...  Choose Life

CuriousLord -> RE: Missouri To Offer 'Choose Life' Plates (1/24/2008 5:57:34 PM)

As much as I deplore abortion and agree with the sentiment the plate says, I'd tend to agree with the court in that it could be seen as politically charged.  Then again, it also strikes me as rather oversensitive, so.. meh.

I mean, jeeze, even though abortion's been a topic on the board lately, the abortion issue doesn't come to mind when I see "Choose Life".  To me, it sounds like one of those corny inspirational sayings, like, "Live like each day was your last!" or something.

It's a pretty sad day when people see "Life" and default to abortion. =/

Sounds fine if they offer "Support your right to choose" plates as well.
