Greater independence is acquired through less reliance on others' goods and services - thats for sure. And equally for sure, we need to get away from reliance on others' oil supplies as a matter of urgency if we have greater independence in mind, and as a matter of even greater urgency in terms of security. To achieve this though, given the intricacies of the trade we all do with the world nowadays and the factor of globalisation and outsourcing, is another matter. But of more pressing concern with the aims of this movement is the funding required, in terms of personal investment in new vehicles etc, corporate investment in terms of changes to manufacturing, after market servicing and of course alternative fuel station fitment and supply, and state investment in terms of new infrastructure - because we are all apparently now in one heck of a mess financially. Add to that that those involved in keeping us on oil, both at home and abroad and those in our administrations who benefit indirectly from oil, and I dont see any possibility soon of a move away from the reliance on oil on anything but a drip by drip scale as individuals take their own decisions, according to their own thoughts and capacity to do so. It will only be when there is a significant proportion of the market switched to non oil energy supplies that it will become worthwhile commercially to make the required developments for these interest groups - when there is a profitable market for them to so. This of course is a chicken and egg situation - if I cant charge my electric car when I get where I'm going then I'm not likely to buy one. My company is one which runs tractor trailers all over Europe on international road transport. I'd love to go green - but its just not possible. I'd love to go carbon neutral and offset all our emissions somehow - but that would be too expensive and put us out of what is a very price competitive market. What we did instead was to look at our incomes and donate some of those towards carbon sequestration in terms of living, working forestry projects all over the third world, where the forestry not only helps in offsetting carbon emissions but also provides valuable resources to the local people. It isnt much, but its something until the day we have electric trucks that can pull 40 tonnes at reasonable speed for 3000km per week and can be recharged wherever we go. E
