I own it

After all, my claim is as legitimate as anyone else's

Where is the unclaimed North? As former owners of one third of the world, we must have a genuine claim to lodge.

Mind you, if the unclaimed North turns out to be Jockland, then it's all yours, take what you need.

P.S. oil is in abundance off the coast of Aberdeen.

Thinking about it some more - doesnt it belong to the Inuit and their relatives from all around the north?

Mind you, it goes against my Viking heritage to have to buy anything from "Skraelings". Far more acceptable to be dependent on the Russians for oil and gas.

maybe we should homestead- in a few years it might be balmy....

More like barmy Rog!

If the ice is melting then this will submerge the very little land available up there I'd have thought - it'd be more like Waterworld (that Kevin Costner film), without the production values (not that they were that good), in the cold, and in total darkness for weeks on end!

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/26/2008 9:23:54 AM)

santa and his elves own it.

philosophy -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/26/2008 4:28:24 PM)

.....i imagine those who have lived there for centuries own it. Assuming anyone can truly be said to own the land.

PrizedPosession -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/26/2008 4:36:50 PM)

They're back at that again?  i though Russia already did the whole mini submarine thing to claim it...

Raechard -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/26/2008 4:49:37 PM)

Get it while it's still there.

luckydog1 -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/26/2008 6:17:11 PM)

Did no one even glance at the article, this is all about the bottom of the Artic Ocean.  There is nothing to homestead or flood.

This is just a side show. The real fight will be for Antarctica. Once we figure a way to burrow through all the ice there will be a wealth of resources available. Can you imagine – an entire continent whose minerals and oil have never been tapped? It will prove irresistible for a resource hungry world.

LadyEllen -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/27/2008 5:37:13 AM)

I agree Marc - much easier to get at as well.

I watched an article about some UK team down there right now; apparently they have found huge lakes far below the ice - in liquid form and are now busy trying to access them. The access is to find out whether there might be ancient lifeforms that have survived in that environment - which will be amazing if the theory is right.

My immediate (and cynical) thought was, "are these lakes freshwater?" - because as the population grows and the environment changes, I hear that freshwater is going to be in more and more short supply - and therefore very valuable indeed.

This kind of depends on where people think the majority of prehistoric life walked/swam about and died. Although the climate has obviously changed a great deal and plates have shifted from one place to another I doubt there is as much oil on the southern and northern tips of the earth as we have typically found in other parts of the world where the sun had more of a direct contact and so greater influence on the congregation patterns of life. I could be wrong but when I look at the variety of life there today compared to the rest of the world I don't think so. Some oil will be found possibly but not a great deal in comparison to the amount we have already exploited elsewhere. About time people were looking for alternatives.

LadyE:
There was a plan put forward in the 70's (by the Rand corp. if I remember correctly) to tow icebergs from Antarctica to southern California for the fresh water that they would provide.  The cost were less than the proposed "Central Valley Program" (which is what we use now)

Raechard:
Have you forgotten about the oil on the "North Slope"  or in the "North Sea"?  Both of which are closer to the north pole than the equator.
Please don't tell me that you still believe that oil comes from decomposed dinosaurs.

Make it an international territory not open to exploitation, like Antarctica.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Who owns the unclaimed north- Russia disputes (1/27/2008 9:45:07 AM)

i thought they said antarctica is supposed to be melted within 30 years.  due to global warming.

"They" say lots of stuff....sometimes it turns out to be true, most of the time it is not.
The truth of the matter is that Antarctica will be snow and ice free in time for you to spend your first social security check to sunbath there.[;)]  So much for your plans to have sex with girls in the snow in Antarctica[:(]
