Did he ever get to the centre of the earth? I forget how it ends, was a sea monster involved. I always mix up the classics.

i loved reading Journey To The Center of The Earth as a kid, it was fascinating to me, Dune is a close second. Fahrenheit 451 was required reading for me in high school so i know i didn't read it with any interest...maybe i should check it out again.

Hands down it's Dune! Had read the original several times many years ago and then voraciously read the series!

Starship Troopers ~ Robert A. Heinlein. I know that you had a Heinlein work on the list, but while I think that Stranger, was a very creative work it is NOT his best work. With Starship, you have both a juvenile and an adult novel. Ender's Game, while a great story, is a juvenile, and while the rest of the series are more adult novels, the stories are not as good. Fahrenheit 451, Journey, Foundation, and 1984, are all dystopia's. I never thought much of Neuromancer. Dune, while good, is not the best. Hitchhiker, really does not fit on this list, for one it is comic and is more soft-sci fi, instead of hard sci-fi. Mote is good, but still not the best.

One more vote for "best" is Left Hand of Darkness ~ Ursula K. LeGuin Question: Why did you chose Journey over 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?

If the question expanded to best sci-fi work, I'd second the vote for Ursula K. Le Guin, but for the Earthsea Trilogy (heck, the trilogy combined is shorter than some sci-fi novels). Again, you get a novel for both juvenile and adult.

More of a "coin flip" than anything; I had planned on a couple of more Rounds of novels, and both 20,000 and the Leguin book would have been there, as would Pohl's Gateway, Walter Miller's A Canticle for Leibowitz, and others.

Tough call. Those are all good books, but I voted for Farenheit 451, though Dune was a close second. Here's my point of view: Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451: This is my favorite because so much of what Bradbury said still remains true after more than 50 years. Even today, as books are transforming into electronic media, the lessons of reading and emotional depth remain true. Literacy and censorship--which are key elements in the book--are even more in danger today than it was in the 1950's, when the book first appeared. What's even more terrifying is that Bradbury said in a recent interview that he has annual battles with publishers who want to alter parts of the book to make it more accomodating to today's readers. The fact that the publishers themselves wish to engage in censorship of a book which deals with that subject make Farenheit 451 more important than ever! Jules Verne - Journey to the Center of the Earth: A good book, and the precursor to Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pellucidar series. My problem with it is that at the end, there really wasn't any point to it. Frank Hebert - Dune: A grand adventure with startling insights on human evolution, ecology, drug addiction, and man's ability to function in a four-dimensional universe. It's a book I go back to again and again. Definitely second-place in my ranks. Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game: have admit that I haven't read this. Douglas Adams - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: A fun-filled romp through a weird SF universe, but the lasting impact is doubtful. George Orwell - 1984: A possible third-place for me. Orwell remains one of my favorite authors. 1984 has lasting impact because of the long endurance of the Soviet bloc, and the prevalence of tyrants everywhere. His warnings were well-heeded throughout the Cold War, and even today many of his insights into Winston Smith's world ring true. The reason I give this book a lower rating is because 1984 is so depressing to read. The atmosphere in the book is stifling, and there is no hope, which is a critical element in literature. Robert A. Heinlein - Stranger In A Strange Land: Another perennial favorite. The ending is a bit oblique, which is why I don't rate it higher. Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle - The Mote In God's Eye: never read it. I read Lucifer's hammer though, which is a great read. William Gibson - Neuromancer: I haven't read this.

Dune. Hands down. No contest. The other books of the series also ranged from good to great. The big shame is that there was supposedly to be a seventh and final book and Herbert died before beginning it. If I had to pick a second book it would probably be Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles. To be sure the science is grossly outdated by today’s standards but it is a wonderful book about the colonization of Mars with lots of social and political insight – including a great analogy to the devastation of the native American cultures by disease brought by the Europeans (the native Martians suffer a similar fate from earth borne diseases). Love the ending where dad shows the kids the "Martians." Brave New World would be my third choice. I’ve never really consider 1984 to be a science fiction book but it is on my list of books that I think everyone should read and occasionally re-read. War of the Worlds and the Time Machine by H.G. Wells are also high on the list.
