Status: offline 		An apology is in order, so, please, forgive me. It was not until this morning on my ride to work that I fully understood I was in error.


Yes, I've noticed that there are many very busy and important people on the roads. You all are hard to miss with the cell phones, laptops, breakfast bars, coffee, cigarettes and all, but until now, I didn't realize I was causing so much trouble for you busy, multitasking drivers.

I figured it out this morning, thanks to the nice lady working on the laptop who needed the lane I was in.

First, ma'am, let me say that when I honked at you from the shoulder, I didn't mean to startle you. My intent was just to give you a little beep to let you know the lane was all yours. But I was braking so hard, I couldn't lift my thumb off the horn button.
My bad.

I surely didn't mean to cause you to nearly hit the guy talking on the cell phone. You know, he was smoking and talking as he moved his SUV right into the space you had just left.

Anyway, the good news is, that's when I realized all of you multitasking drivers must be texting each other about intended lane changes and running traffic lights and stop signs and such. I'm sorry - I'm still using old-fashioned blinkers. I didn't realize you needed some time to e-notify that guy that you needed the lane back.
I really messed it up for both of you!

I can only say that the guard rail was a little distracting, and I was only thinking about myself. I'll try harder next time.

Like I said, I didn't know that was how you multitasking drivers were communicating. It must have been in an e-mail, but my laptop fell off my tank and I haven't replaced it.

However, I have a solution.

I know many of you are so busy and important that you have no choice - you have to eat, work, talk, read and do lots of other really important things as you drive.

Those of us who use the road only for traveling would be happy to stay out of your way; we just need to know you're coming.

A little visual clue would help - I was thinking of a bumper sticker. That way, everyone could identify you as Drivers Utilizing Multiple Behaviors.

Of course, that's a little long, so we'd cut it down to an acronym - DUMB.
If you'd place stickers on the front, back and maybe the sides of your car, the rest of us would know not to interfere with you on the road.

I think it's such a good idea, I'll pay for the bumper stickers and even put them on for you.
Deal?

It's winter here, no motorcycles and still people multitasking while driving on icy roads.

Status: offline 		"Loud pipes save lives" is a well known quote for a good reason. It's true.

Screamingly loud pipes are just obnoxious and remind me of reeaally big trucks and all those 4x4 suvs that hog the road and make any accidedent a death-trap. Add to that these same drivers who talk on the phone, and multi-task, etc, and drive when they are super tired (same as being drugged).

One guy was so polite the other day he slowed way down in a quick way to pull over into my lane, no warning, no blinker, so he could handle his important phone call... Glad I wasn't on a bike, or he would have creamed me.

Status: offline 		Driving is a tough subject for me. I might never be legal again so I must drive exceedingly defensively. And I got a couple buddies with bikes. Suffice it to say I used to have more.

My favorite cousin died on a bike. I mean the cousin that some of us have who has the fast car and takes you out drinking when you are 14, cops you a lid (yes I am that old) and doesn't even pinch it.

I must admit though, that my cousin died from stupidity. He was all happy passing the traffic jam on the gravel burm when all of the sudden there was a truck in a driveway blocking the way. He had to lay it down and all went well untril his neck met Mr Driveshaft. Closed casket. One of those cases where he would have been better off going SPLAT into the side of the truck.

And then I know a guy in a wheelchair, and another who's own Mother wouldn't recognize him because he has a new face, he ground the old one off on the pavement.

Some people say I have alot of balls, but not enough to drive a bike in the city. If I lived out in the sticks maybe, but not here in town. People just don't drive right. A rider is just too vulnerable. What might have been a fender bender becomes fatal, as there are no fenders to speak of to bend.

There is another good piece out there, I guess it's called "You didn't see me". It has been posted here, I wouldn't mind printing it. I like that DUMB idea, it's kinda like Jeff Foxwothy's STUPID sign.

Y'know us people in cars could benfit from those bimper stickers as well, so what is the standard donation ? The check will be in the mail.

Never heard of loud pipes actually causing an accident......unless it's interferring with your ability to hear the keypad while you're busy texting? *laughs*

I have worked on alot of cars, give me a GM anytime, except a Cadillac.

Status: offline 		a friend of mine is a 55 year old biker and knows how to ride a bike.  he got run into by a kid delivering pizza's who was on a cell phone...the kid walked away without a scratch and my friend had brain injuries and organ damage and broken bones all the way down to his toes.  this will haunt my friend for the rest of his life between astronomical medical bills and pain that will never go away, ever. 
  
i dated a biker for a few years and i rode around on the back of his bike a lot...i learned a great deal about what bikers need when they're on the road, which isn't a lot; just some awareness, space and courtesy for the most part.   it was thrilling for me to be on the back of his bike, but terrifying at the same time, wondering if the people around were aware of us at all.

I'd say the moral of this story is...Outlaw Bikes, they're a nuisance, a burden on insurance company's, & infringe on my rights as a 6000lb SUV driving multitasking driver. [/sarcasm]

But honestly, I supposed all the chrome you put on bikes is to help with visibility too?
Face it, "loud pipes saves lives" is a slogan used as an excuse and justification for wanting loud, obnoxious chrome filled bikes, and the bad boy image they portray.

Do we have anyway to objectively validate this statement?
Do you want loud pipes to be legal for everyone or just bikers?
In todays modern cars that are virtually soundproof with their four zillion watt stereos and their hands free blue tooth ear pieces how would they hear an unmuffeled P 51 let alone a motorcycle.
I have been riding a motorcycle for fifty years now and I like to drive fast and split lanes in traffic.  What I have found to be the most effective way to alert those in cages to my presence is an air horn (available at most any pep boys) and a cyber light (a device that modulates your headlight to "flicker".  What I have noticed in my fifty years on two wheels is that loud pipes tend to piss people in cages off to the point that they will actually aim for you to squeeze you off if you are splitting traffic.

Both times bent the foot peg back but only brushed my leg.

Three inches to the left,and I would have lost the leg.I was doing 45-50 ,maybe more.

You gotta ride as if your going to get hit in NJ/NY,supper defensively.

I like MOPAR because of the forward thinking innovation they consistently serve up.  I have never had a MOPAR that the doors did not sag.  I like GM because of the plethora of aftermarket goodies that are cheaply available.
Yeah I have a 472 and a 440 wedge, both are almost 40 years old.
Of course all my bikes are Japanese.
