I saw this episode on Law & Order last night where this 'doctor' invented Torture Lite (tm) and they used it on "terrorists" in Iraq. One of the army guys from this mercenary company she taught ended up encountering one of the guys he tortured, and so killed him, an interpretor, and the police guys started trailing him

Anywho, one of the things that came up was this position called a 'stress position' where a guy's forced to kneel with his wrists tied together and pulled up from behind him. "There's no permanent physical or psychological harm." It can be all fine and dandy, but you better believe there's gonna be psychological harm on a nonconsenting adult, and definitely physical harm from a 'stress position' held for a period of 24-48 hours.

Can't say I liked the resolution of this episode, but I think the episode in its entirety was well done and very believeable.

I have seen that one when it first aired a few weeks back (gotta love the strike)
Anyway, I really liked it, I thought it was well done too

I saw that.  Good episode.  The L&O series have actually done several epsiodes dealing with BDSM, including one that had the detectives visiting a dungeon where the Domme that ran it made it quite clear that the people that attended there were all consenting adults.

It is a well known technique the CIA have been teaching in counter-terrorism training to half the secret police forces in the world, and I understand is still widely used by Americam torturers today.

It has a long and very inglorious  history as a torture technique, and the idea that  it is somehow harmless and benign is **** ridiculous, it can cause all kinds of physical damage to joints, ligaments, etc. and other damage. Just ask John McCain!

It was banned wiithin the British forces, along with many other torture techniques still used by US forces, after they were used in Northern Ireland and shown to be ineffective in eliciting truth.Though some of our guys do 'forget' that sometimes.

The  fact is that under torture you'll say anything to make it stop.

If you're innocent, and if you survive it will convince you to then go 'join the resistance', along with the rest of your family even if you weren't active before.

If you really ae a terrorist you'll probably come out with the prepared cover story your trainers in counter-interrogation techniques told you to say.

Why the ***** do you think your counter-terrorism efforts have made such a mess of South America and Iraq?

Not only do they not work, they mobilise the whole population against you!

Hehe, I saw the title and had to come check out the thread.  I LOVE this show.

Yes I've seen several Law & Order episodes that involve BDSM, usually they try to point out that people are consenting but usually the BDSMers are also the perps so ....well... anyway...I still like the show.

I saw one the other night that got me all hot even though the people weren't consenting and I should have been outraged.  This guy kidnapped a woman who had just immigrated to the US, kept her as his sex slave and servant, tied her up in a closet and whipped her etc.  I know I know....not cool.  But it still got some yummy fantasies going in my head.

Oh and the judge who they were trying to get a search warrant from for the guy's house did say something about "whips and chains don't necessarily mean non-consent."  Unfortunatly in this case they did so it probably didn't paint BDSM very well...stilll I really enjoyed the episode cuz I'm messed up like that. There was an episode where female body were found in a backyard (of course unknown) along w/a dog collar/leash. Finn comments, "She was someone's pet" and later on someone commented, "BDSM session gone bad"??  God, i love that show!!!

Charlotte, was that the one were they found the woman in just her underwear in the box under the master bed? I've seen that episode so many times. It's one of the few I always remember the ending too.

And it still always gives me the creepy shivers. (Because it was very much non-consentual.)

L&O series seem to address the BDSM lifestyle without much judgment. It is what it is and realistic dynamics are part of the plot.

The CSI series have seemed to look down on or use it as "look how freaky people are, they must be bad" sort of way. Only the LasVegas one seemed to get close to rationality before going back to pulp sensibilities.

charlotte12 -> RE: Law and Order: SVU (2/11/2008 1:36:55 PM)

Yes kitten that's the one.

I know what you mean about the creepy shivers.  I think law and order actually did me more harm than good for a while because I would get all excited by all these things that were supposed to be so horrible.   I didn't know yet that those kind of activities could be done in a consensual way and so I just thought how horrible I must be for being excited by such awful things. :(

Still a yummy show though. [;)]

kittengirl8 -> RE: Law and Order: SVU (2/11/2008 5:28:20 PM)

*laughs* Yeah, I kind of know what you mean.

As for the judgemental slant you seem to see in a lot of shows... I don't know, SVU can be a bit on the judgemental side, but it seems like most shows involve realistic judgement. (Who doesn't see judgement of BDSM?)

I just wish once you could see a nice, consentual poly family, D/s relationship, whatever. Just for a change of pace.

I have seen this episode a couple of times. I am a huge fan of SVU. There was another, where the young girl was brought from another country and she was used and abused by "Andrew McCarthy" (Part of the bratpack). At then end, Elliot and Liv finally found her in a box under the bed. Terrifying. No consent and total abuse.
