If this is house, be sure to get some info on the heating/electric bills, that stuff can kill you, especially if it is an older, not well insulated structure.

D'oh, n/m you are in CA, won't have to deal with that stuff, unless it's air conditioning.

We're renting, we're not buying. And all of our income will be going towards rent and other life expenses, not paying a finders fee

Katy, it's pretty cold here, We do need our heater every winter. Some winter's less than others but this year winter's been very nasty. We're having rain and wind storms, winds hard enough to blow down tree's and fences and shingles off roofs. We've been getting down to the low 30's 40's at night. Which obviously isn't as nasty and cold as some other regions, but it's pretty freaking cold right now. December Janurary and feburary are pretty nasty wet an cold months.

These are the things that they ask for when applying for an apt.

40.00 to 75.00 application fee (Per applicant, unless married)
Proof of income (Last 3 check stubs will do)
Electric bill in your name
You must make 3 times the amount of rent
Proof of renters insurance

I have recently moved into my own place. I am actually going to make a post about this experience. It still upsets me when I think of it.

Total utilities costs like hydro when including heating and cooling, phone, cable, internet services can add up to almost as much as the rent if not more especially in a house so expecting one to earn more than 3 times the rent of a place is pretty reasonable,
If you are balancing right on the 1/3rd of your income for your rent, once you also pay out renters insurance it can make for very slim picking to live off of., and it can get nightmarish if your income suddenly falls because you lost a few days of work due to an injury or sickness, or if you end up laid up for a couple months due to surgery like in my case where sickness and accidents benefits is half of my regular income, your not going to have enough income during that time to pay rent and utilities never mind food and other living expenses. So it helps to have enough breathing room to be put away money into savings to help cover you if your income falls for some reason. So if me I would be looking for rentals that are a 1/4 or less of my income

James has a cell phone we probably won't be getting a land line unless it's for dsl or something, and even then it's only 18 dollars a month for a very basic no thrills phone plan. I'm on SSI and I could very well get more than I do now, because the living situation changed so drastically, of course breathing room is good when you search for a place, so we won't go for the maximum we can afford right away lets say you can afford 12 hundred a month, well that's just a number we know we can go up to if nessisary, not that we're gonna automatically pick a 1200 dollar a month rent right off the bat:)

Ok so we almost did, but it was more space and tons nicer for less than an apartment would be. you're looking at basically 1200 a month for a two bedroom, and 1k a month for 1 bedroom that takes our 30 and 40 pound dog, and then a pet fee a month. And yes, a 2 bedroom is absolutely nessisary and not negotiable in my mind . lol.

My dishnetwork service is only 70 dollars a month and 3 of us are splitting the bill in half so it's only like 20 really. and I got the top 200 channels, comcast in my minds a rip off they want almost 80 bucks for very little.

i just did the same thing about 4 months ago so i know how frustrating it is, but had my credit and background checked as well....i'm currently looking for a condo or small house to buy and getting approved for that was a lot easier than it was for the apartment i'm currently in.

good luck yourhand, is the market saturated there? when there are lots of renters the complexes tend to not be as lenient with things like they are when they are begging people to rent.

I don't know if it's saturated or not I mean there's litterally hundreds of apartments you can choose from, providing you don't have any pets to consider * if you do , well then you're kind of limited* and some complexes are litterally right next door to their competitor, so maybe that does mean its saturated.

i should have been more clear, i meant is it saturated with renters so that there are not enough apartments or rentals? that always makes things more stringent, etc. if there are a lot available then i would say just keep looking, not all are the same or have the same requirements. good luck.

oh lol. I don't know if lots an lots are looking to rent or not, I'd say no cause every time I've called a place to inquire about pet policies there's always been openings.
