What are you using the bamboo for?
If for canes, I'll advise "don't". It is hollow and splinters when used to strike. It's generally not a very durable material for SM play if you like the person you're playing with.
OTOH, bamboo poles can be used for rope bondage like it's shown here on Suz's rope lessons page: http://www.sxysadist.com/ropelesson.htm. I've not really heard of any specific instructions for these heavy 1+ inch sections. I suppose you could soak them in water (like a bathtub) or put them in a drafter's tube or pvc pipe capped off full of water to condition it and keep it moist and less apt to split.
